An Arsenal fan threw a banana at Gareth Bale

Tottenham proved to be the superior side in the latest edition of the north London derby, beating Arsenal 2-1 to go seven points clear of their rivals in the table. Perhaps sensing that their side's lackluster defending would ultimately be exposed by Gareth Bale, the Premier League's February Player of the Month, one Arsenal fan at White Hart Lane decided to engage in a bit of prop comedy and throw a banana at Bale as he prepared to take a corner kick in the first half.

Though it's normally an act with racist connotations, the banana was intended for Bale because he has been subjected to the tiresome joke that he looks like a monkey for years now. And when a man is in the form of his life with eight goals in his last six games going into the derby, this is the sort of thing desperate people resort to as a way of making themselves feel slightly better for a fleeting moment.

Shortly after the banana was thrown, Bale scored Spurs' first goal in the 37th minute. Two short minutes later, Aaron Lennon made it 2-0. Per Mertesacker eventually got one back for Arsenal in the 51st minute (with a little help from a Bale deflection), but, as usual, Arsene Wenger was doomed to sadness. And after Spurs won with relatively little trouble, Bale probably retired to the dressing room to eat all the nutritious snacks Arsenal fans hurled at him.
