  • Judge refuses to dismiss tax evasion charges against Lionel Messi, who could now face trial

The tax evasion case against Lionel Messi and his father will drag on as a Spanish court has decided to proceed with the case despite the prosecution recommending that the case against Messi should be dropped. The prosecutor argued that Messi did not have knowledge of the alleged fraud and that his father was solely responsible, but the judge remains unconvinced.

    From Reuters:

According to Marca, the judge "gave public prosecutors 10 days to request the opening of oral proceedings or the dismissal of the trial."

People are always eager to find ways to compare Messi to Maradona, but continuing a tax evasion case against the prosecutors' recommendations might be taking it a bit too far.

  • Polish league keeper banks the ball off opponent's face and into his own net

Brooks Peck at Dirty Tackle2 days ago

The only goal of the Polish Ekstraklasa match between Lechia Gdansk and Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala was an odd one. In the 29th minute, Podbeskidzie B-B keeper Richard Zajac received a simple backpass from one of his defenders and took a moment too long to decide what he wanted to do with it. This allowed Lechia midfielder Maciej Makuszewski to get right in front of him. Zajac decided not to let this deter his plans, though. So he kicked the ball off of Makuszewski's face, causing it to trickle into his own net.

Makuszewski was credited with the easiest goal of his career, Lechia won 1-0, and Zajac somehow managed to make a mistake worse than his haircut.

The new season has only just begun, leaving plenty of time for everyone to not forget that this happened.
