  • Clint Dempsey talks to people who can't recognize Clint Dempsey

Brooks Peck at Dirty Tackle1 hr ago

Clint Dempsey was recently in New York City for MLS's FIFA 15 launch party (he's on the cover of the North American edition with Leo Messi), so ESPN had him ask some people on the street about the U.S. national team and Clint Dempsey. The video above only shows Dempsey talking to three men who are delightfully oblivious to the fact that they are talking to Clint Dempsey. Though this is far too small a sample size from which to draw conclusions about Dempsey's recognition amongst the general public, it's still good for a laugh.

When asked about the captain of the U.S. team, one man bemoaned the fact that he was left off the World Cup squad at the last minute, thinking it was Landon Donovan, who will probably now fly to New York just to find this man and hug him forever. Once this man remembered that Dempsey was the captain at the World Cup and confirmed that he is, in fact, a good player, Dempsey casually told him "my name's Clint" as he walked away. The man was then left to begin the long and taxing process of figuring out what just happened.

  • Don't get too excited about the FIFA ExCo member predicting a 2022 World Cup venue change

Brooks Peck at Dirty Tackle1 day ago

FIFA executive committee member Theo Zwanziger is making headlines for his prediction that the 2022 World Cup will not be held in Qatar. But before this is taken as a major sign that FIFA will change the host nation after four years of controversy and protest it's important to note exactly what Zwanziger said and his history of speaking out against Qatar.

First, here are Zwanziger's latest comments. Note that he prefaces his statement by saying "I personally think." This is an important distinction from someone who is often out of sync with his cohorts. From Reuters:

You might remember that FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke made headlines of his own back in January when he spoke out of turn and said that the 2022 World Cup would not be held in June/July because of the Qatar heat, but that was quickly shot down by other FIFA executives.

  • This is how Louis van Gaal looks when Man United lose to Leicester City

Brooks Peck at Dirty Tackle2 days ago

That look when you go from 3-1 up to 5-3 down.

That look when you have Falcao, Rooney, Van Persie and Di Maria up top, but Rafael, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Tyler Blackett at the back.

That look when Man United lose after having a two-goal lead for the first time in the Premier League era on your watch.

That look when Man United lose at Leicester for the first time since 1985 on your watch.

That look when Mario Balotelli is laughing at you.

    Man utd ... LOL

That look when even Filbert, the Leicester City mascot, is making fun of your team.

That look when you suddenly regret not taking the "easier" Spurs job.

That look when you just want David Moyes to hug you and say that he knows how it feels.

  • Celta Vigo's Pablo Hernandez surprises everyone by scoring audacious backheel

Brooks Peck at Dirty Tackle2 days ago

Pablo Hernandez opened the scoring in a 2-2 draw between Atletico Madrid and Celta Vigo on Saturday with a backheel that would've made Zlatan Ibrahimovic proud. In the 19th minute, Hernandez kicked his leg behind his back to connect with a ball that defender Diego Godin had all but given up on, thinking it was destined to go out of play. Hernandez's effort paid off though, as he managed to direct it towards the net as Atletico keeper Miguel Moya was caught at the post, also thinking that there was no way Hernandez could possibly connect his foot with the ball behind his back.

But, perhaps even to his own surprise, Hernandez pulled it off and now regular, run of the mill backheels will never be impressive again.
