All the madness of a record-setting night in the Champions League

All the madness of a record-setting night in the Champions League

The Champions League goal dam broke, flooding the competition with a whopping 40 goals in one night. The all-time record for goals in a single night of Champions League play is 44 set in 1997, but that was on a night with 12 matches. On Tuesday, there were only eight.

Here's a rundown of what happened...

-The most stunning result was Bayern Munich's 7-1 win over Roma. Five of Bayern's goals were scored in the first half. The good news for Roma? Their one goal scored by Gervinho in the second half was the first Bayern have conceded since August (814 minutes of play).

-Not to be outdone, Shakhtar Donetsk beat BATE Borisov 7-0 to match the competition's record for the biggest away win. Six of those goals came in the first half, which is a new record. All seven of the Ukrainian club's goals were scored by Brazilians. This will not make up for Brazil's 7-1 loss to Germany in the World Cup semifinal, though.

-Shakhtar's Luiz Adriano matched Lionel Messi's record of five goals in a Champions League match. His first four came in a span of 17 minutes — a new record.

-Chelsea beat Maribor 6-0 (a.k.a. 45 minutes of work for Shakhtar). Didier Drogba scored his first goal since returning to the club after coming on for the injured Loic Remy (who hurt his groin while scoring a goal...of course). And he did it in remarkably similar fashion to his last goal goal for the club 885 days earlier in the Champions League final...

-Lionel Messi scored in Barcelona's 3-1 win over Ajax to match Cristiano Ronaldo for second on the Champions League's all-time top scorers list with 69 goals. But given everything else that happened, that's just kind of meh.

-But even on a night all about scoring, Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer, the Noah of this goal flood, still found a way to produce arguably the greatest highlight of them all with a save from point-blank range.
