Former teammate calls out Sanchez for magazine shoots

Sanchez later threw the rescue tube to the wrong person. (GQ)Former New York Jets All-Pro Kris Jenkins told ESPN Radio that Mark Sanchez lost credibility in the team locker room when he posed for pictures in men's fashion magazines.

Jenkins was addressing comments made by injured Jets backup Greg McElroy that said the team struggled because of a "corrupt mindset" in the locker room.

"The No. 1 quarterback should have said that a long time ago. It would have been all part of the process of him growing a pair and standing up and being a man. But the thing is, he lost his because he got caught up in the wash that is New York, in the spotlight, taking pictures in the magazines and doing all of that stuff. That's just what everybody has seen with Mark Sanchez, they got tired of it."

Sanchez isn't good because he posed for some photos in GQ? That's as ridiculous as me saying that Kris Jenkins isn't great on "NFL Today," so he should spend his time studying game film instead of making cringeworthy Halloween sketches. What does one have to do with another?

By Jenkins' estimation, Sanchez should hibernate during the offseason, armed only with playbooks, film and acorns he buried in the fall. If he does that, then he's Aaron Rodgers, right?

Tom Brady poses with goats, prances around in Uggs and goes to Carnival with his hair in a ponytail. Peyton Manning hosted "Saturday Night Live." Drew Brees does charity work. It doesn't bother them at all.

Sanchez isn't playing good football. And he may not devote the proper time to the game; I don't know. But if the first part is caused by the second part, it's symptomatic of a larger problem and isn't because of a few fashion spreads. The issue isn't that Mark Sanchez is on the cover of magazines, it's that he's not playing well enough to get on the cover of magazines that celebrate football.

      1. Tom Brady, Payton Manning and Brees have established their work ethic and commitment to the game over many years of leadership and great play, not to mention each has won a superbowl. Nobody questions their commitment to the game.
      2. Nobody gets criticized for charity work, which is not considered an indulgence in one's ego like a magazine shoot.
      3. If you can't see what is wrong with that photo shoot, given Sanchez's reputation and the situation in New York, then you really don't understand the dynamics of a football team.

"Elvis14" putting in the work u say?.well if he is doing as ur saying then please explain How after 3 yrs He STILL CAN NOT READ A DEF. Coverage?.right there is PROOF he doesnt pay attention when watching game films!!!! for if He was he would "see" how a Def lines up against certain looks!!!!!.everytime he Yells out the 1 thing He has excelled at in 3yrs..that KILL-KILL @ the line,85% of the time the play HE Changed to results in a INT---a PICK-6..a Fumble...

Now he was a #5 rated player..but in 3yrs has played like a 3rd round at Best!!!!...Newton who plays with Panthers in His 1st yr beat Sanchez big time..TOTAL TD;s..Passing Yards..LESS FUMBLES!! only had 5...Sanchez had how many? thought so..Both Newton and Dalton both Pure Rookies had Higher end of yr QBR ratings!!!!

what they posted in there 1st yr;s beat a QB in league for 3 yrs!!!!..thats BAD....

"And he may not devote the proper time to the game; I don't know."

Well why don't you do some research and find out?

Can we stop talking about the Jets? They didn't make the playoffs, while 12 others did. How 'bout we focus on those teams instead of the other 20 losers.
      • jimribs 4 months ago
Exactly. There has been about 15 articles in SC this week about the Jets.

Tom Brady's been in GQ. Tell me it made him a bad QB.

That was only after he already was a superbowl champion...which sanchez has yet to do.

Sanchez hasn't won any thing yet, is playing badly to the extent that they had to scale back an offense that he could handle. Sanchez needed to demonstrate more leadership and positve football activity rather then take up modeling. The modeling doesn't stop him from being a good player/leader if he has his priorities lined up. NY scene became too big of a priority over football for the Jets and that is what the comments were all about. Your analysis of what was said was way off line, it has to do with accomplishing some thing as a player/team before becoming the flamboyant QB doing the NY scene.

I don't think Kris said the pictures made him a bad QB, he just said that others lost respect for him when he did, (and I would add with out taking care of business first), If he was running more touchdown drives than stalled drives, no one would care.

This is horrible reporting. You are ASSUMING that Kris Jenkins thinks all of these things because of one paragraph you copied and pasted. Jenkin's quote does not say anything about Sanchez not being a good QB. And what does Drew Brees' charity work have to do with anything?

Bottom line is that Sanchez is not the qb the Jets thought they were getting. He may have all the physical tools, but lacks some critical components. He cannot make the sideline or long passes accurately. Defenses have learned this and adjusted, flooding the area between the numbers and 15 yards out. He is terrible at leading his receivers. Result is missed passes, and smaller gains on passes that do connect. He will also get some receiver killed some day. Worse of all, he has not learned a thing about protecting the ball. He makes the same mistakes he made as a rookie. Fumbles, stupid throws that get picked off, too many risks at the worst times. He is also shown that he cannot survey the field, and only focuses on his primary receiver. That is why dbacks jump the routes, and dlinemen block, and even intercept, so many of his passes. Since he has not improved in these key areas after three years, chances are he never will. He will continue to be, at best, a bottom third starter, if a starter at all. It will only get worse now that other teams know his weaknesses and play to them.

Kris Jenkins should pose for a weight loss magazine

I'm not giving him a pass, but I will play devil's advocate here. He played hurt and kept quiet about it.. Anyone who watched this season saw him walk off the field more then once (denver/philly) with his arm hanging like he had a seperated shoulder. He played through it with a swiss cheese line and a cry baby recieving core. Changes need to be made, but I don't think he is the biggest problem. QB's get too much credit and too much blame. Five of the 8 loses were to teams wstill in the super bowl hunt now. If you give passes for miami and philly when he was obviously less then 100% he had a pretty solid season. I'm not saying the guy is aaron rodgers, but he isn't the worst QB either. He is more then servicable if other problems get fixed.

Everybody is jumping on Sanchez for things that were out of his control. When the GM brings in some rookie OL and you have an OC that does not know how to change the offense to play to it's strneghs you get an all around poor Offense. Look at other QB's that had poor O lines. No QB in the league will be successful when they have less than 3 seconds to make a pass. What happens when you get to Brady, Peyton and Rothlisberger early and often??? They all lose.

Sanchez is just another in a long line of prettyboys from USC with little talent and huge self entitilement.

Mark Sanchez may not be playing well enough to get on the cover of magazines that celebrate football, but clearly he plays well enough for Shut Down Corner to do a piece on him.
With all of the playoff stories out there and with all of the players who are still playing, why focus on Mark Sanchez and the NY Jets? Both are on vacation.
To mention Mark Sanchez in the same breath as Brady, Manning, and Brees is just absurd. Sanchez will never be what those QBs are, so why compare?
      Just my two cents.

How much does Jenkins weigh now, probably about 450 pounds...Jenkins was never a True Jet...He was a rent-a-player for 2 years and was injured both years with the Jets...Shut-up, Jenkins...GO JETS!...

It shows a lack of focus for a QB that has been on the hot seat the last few years. If you can't see that, then I feel sorry for you as an "NFL Expert". If you are on the hotseat, you don't want any attention to yourself and will focus your time on improving. That is why Romo keeps getting killed. It's how it works. I can't believe you can't see this
      • Cynthia 4 months ago
Romo gets killed because he plays golf in the off season? Actually, Romo had a great year despite being killed by his offensive line. I can't believe you can't see it, or are you just talking out your butt?
      • James Z 4 months ago
He had a great year but his team will be watching the playoffs from their couches. Remember the Jessica Simpson saga? Remember the vacation to Mexico?

You know what the major difference between Sanchez and the truly great Qbs in the league that do photo shoots, host tv shows, party in Brazil, or do charity work? They earned the attention by playing on the highest level. All Sanchez did was get drafted by the Jets.
    • Dan  •  Gardner, Massachusetts  •  4 months ago
Maybe he doesn't have enough TALENT to succeed at that level. Maybe the JETS made a mistake in their evaluation of him coming out of college
    • elvis14  •  Atlanta, Georgia  •  4 months ago
Sounds to me like it's the Jets not named Sanchez that need to grow a pair. Why not be happy for Mark and also realize that any publicity Sanchez gets is also publicity for the Jets? Why would that matter? Because it helps fans pay attention to the team and it's fans that are paying attention that go to games, buy jerseys, watch the games on Sunday...you know all that stuff that pays for player salaries.

Now if Mark Sanchez (who doesn't have the talent of Peyton, Tom or Drew) isn't putting in the work, then say THAT. I be he's putting int he work, he's just not that good.

Urinating on the Jets is like being in the front office; it's a 12-month-a-year job.
