Yankees contact Hideki Matsui about open DH job

US PresswireNow that the New York Yankees have traded away young DH/catcher Jesus Montero, the team is looking for alternatives to stick out there offensively.

Monday's rumor mill had Johnny Damon as a likely man to fill the job. Tuesday brings the name of another Yankee veteran: Hideki Matsui.

The New York Post reports that the team has "contacted" Matsui about the opening. The last time the 37-year-old Matsui was in a Yankees uniform, it was Game 6 of the 2009 World Series and he tied a Series record with six RBIs in that game before being named the Series MVP, the first full-time DH to earn the award. After all, he had batted .615 with three homers and eight RBIs in the Series.

The Yanks may be hoping he can revive some of those heroics. He spent last season with the Oakland Athletics, batting .251 with 12 homers and 72 RBIs.

"Matsui was a great fit for us last year and we all loved having him on our team," A's manager Bob Melvin said Monday, the Post reports. "But this year it doesn't look like a fit for us based on the personnel we have going forward."

Let the rumors come to you. Follow Scoop du Jour on Twitter or Facebook.

i hope they do bring him back,, hes got a lot of class

Class? How do you know that? I never heard him speaking the national langauge. He is just another overpaid jock and he had his day in the sun. It took alot of brains to trade Montero who was groomed by the Yankee farm system and has 15 to 20 years of ballplaying ahead of him. The Godzilla of movie fame is more exciting than old Matsui.

I think that the Yankee front office is slipping. Why trade away Montero? He will come back to haunt you. Mr Washed Up, Freddy Garcia? Freddy who? Freddy Fender would have done better on the mound. Now the washed up Matsui? I thought that he was in Japan managing a Toyota dealership. The Yankee front office is taking lessons from the Mets front office by trading away well groomed talent. My advice to the Yankee front office is to stop basking in the past glory and remember that New Yorkers like me don't back losers. The words NY Yanks equals success. Stop slipping at the helm & remember that the Yanks did nothing between 1982 and 1994. The NY Yanks are too well paid to lose."There is no replacement for victory".(My Dad landed on Leyte in Oct 1944 & I m proud to quote Gen Macarthur.)

I think Godzilla would be a good fit. He cannot carry a team but wouldn't need to. No ego is a plus. You could also make a case for Damon. Good for the clubhouse and loves the big at bat. I'd take either one. Don't need Pena.

    Yep. Bring him back.

matsui big time clutch performer with the bat if it were my money he 'd be DH and damon my second choice.

If in doubt, refer to 2009 W.S. game 6. That will say it all.

Now that Montero has been traded, and Posada retired, the Yankees do have an opening at DH, so why not bring back Matsui? It's kind of an out with the new, in with the old. lol

Very good Real. I believe Damon would be the better choice. He can still run and fill in.

brian cashman has done a fantastic job on the starting rotation. pineda is more valuable than montero because yankees had no starters other than CC. kuroda is underrated and should be a solid #3 pitcher. i would take matsui over damon
    • gizmo from Queensbridge 22 days ago
Hey, Mr Brain Surgeon be advised that Pineda is damaged goods.Kuroda looks as nervous on the mound as newly wed bride. He may or may not work out. Japanese pitchers traditionally become choke artists in the USA. Trading away Montero is the analogous to the errors of the Mets' front office. i.e. the Nolan Ryan trade, etc. Cashman is a "cash man", but he is slipping at the helm & the enemy, Tampa Bay is laughing it all the way to the league pennant. Smell the coffee. Jeter and Rodriguez better stop night clubbing and get serious because the future is looking pretty dim. Mickey Mantle, Moose Skowron,Bob Cerv, Roger Maris,Whitey Ford & Co. please intercede with Zeus and Aphrodite and make a miracle happen this year.

Send Garcia back to Venezuela. He was sent by the dictator Chavez to destroy the favorite NYC pastime: the NY Yanks

Ozzie Guillen was Mr Pro Castro until it interfered with this payroll checks. The "dropout jock" quickly changed his tune when he was called in to make an accounting for his fat mouth. He has been here long enough to know that overpaid jocks don't need to make political statements.Freddy Garcia is the Manchurian Candidate of the Yankee pitching staff. Do we still have diplomatic relations with Venezuela?

Hidekisun is always welcome in NYC. Glad to see they are at least considering him. Rather Matsui than Damon. GO GO GODZIRRA!!!

what happen to all the pro sports. Its all about money. A dad has a hard time to take his son to a game when it cost $80 for a seat and a dog for two.

go yankees go you are #1

    resign chavez forget damon/matsui
  • steven  •  New York, New York  •  4 months ago
i would say get matsui since damon want a bit more money and playing time since he wants to crawl to 3000 hit in the next 2 years or the yankees could get fielder and switch around some player position think about arod to dh tex to 3rd and fielder to 1st

    carlos pena, as the DH
Montero for a # 1 or 2 starter, great move
Montero is just a right handed dh and that's all he will ever be.
  • jspectNY97  •  New York, New York  •  4 months ago
    they should get carlos pena

    Morning Hooter,
Both Matsui and Damon are team players and Yankee fan favorites. I believe that Damon brings a little more to the table. He can run and fill in LF and 1B if needed. Either would be OK with me.

Personally, I think the Yankees should sign A-rod's cousin to play DH
  • str A's hooter  •  4 months ago
The A's now have a solid outfield with Seth Smith, Coco Crisp and Reddick. Chris Carter and Mike Taylor are a couple of young sluggers that can fill the DH. I just hope the A's young pitchers can do the job.

matsui was great in 2009. he was and is one dimentional.
not breaking the bank this off season, and now having a full and hopefully well stocked starting line up, my off season wish is PRINCE FIELDER. the big market money is all but dried up, and prince could be our big popi for years to come. and unlike matsui, he can spell tex at first base. the best line up in baseball will be overwhelming and could even withstand AJ's every five day outings!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is fantastic news. Now, if we could only convince the Yankee front office to reacquire Lance Berkman via trade ...
