Twins reliever Joel Zumaya’s career may be over

Reliever Joel Zumaya has spent his whole six-year career with the Detroit Tigers, missing last season and the final four months of the 2010 season with elbow problems.

The 27-year-old was signed by the Minnesota Twins in January to a deal that was set to pay him anywhere between $800,000 and $1.7 million. The Twins are going to have to pay out only $400,000 of that now, because Zumaya unsurprisingly has hurt his elbow again and it will cause him to be out for the season and possibly could end his career, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Zumaya suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament, the paper reports, and will have to decide whether he wants to have Tommy John surgery or not.

"It's unfortunate," Twins GM Terry Ryan said, according to the Pioneer Press. "We took a risk, and it didn't work."

As a rookie in 2006, Zumaya threw a fastball that sometimes topped 100 mph for 83 1/3 innings and struck out 97.
