Diamondbacks’ Stephen Drew makes return to field

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew's season ended last July when he had surgery on his ankle. Monday was the first time that he put the ankle to the test and took grounders at the team's spring training facilities in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"Weird and good at the same time," Drew said about how he felt afterward, MLB.com reports. "Overall, I was pretty pleased with the way it went. Today was a good day; it really was."

It isn't clear when Drew will take grounders again for the National League West champs. "We'll see how tomorrow goes," Drew said Monday, according to the site. "We have to see when I come in. That's going to be the key, how much can I do before I can't do anything and have to take two days off."

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said that Drew moved around better than he thought he would, but the team plans to take his recovery slowly. "He's still got a long way to go for sure," Gibson said, the site notes.
