    • Boston’s Bobby Jenks not returning soon

US PresswireBoston Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks is in the middle of a two-year, $12 million contract and it appears that he'll be paid a large chunk of that money without throwing a single pitch. Manager Bobby Valentine said Monday that Jenks won't be back in team's lineup likely before midseason.

"Bobby said he'd like to take one week at a time,'' Valentine said, the Globe reports. "That means he's a long way about thinking baseball activities. He's really had a terrible offseason health-wise. He's a real back-burner guy. I don't think we'll see him in baseball activities for quite a while if at all this spring.''

Jenks was not in the lineup for the Sox last year after July 7 and made only 19 appearances for the team, during which he earned himself a 6.32 ERA.

Since last pitching, Jenks has had two surgeries in an attempt to fix up a spinal issue and has taken medication to dissolve a pulmonary embolism.

    • Nuggets lose Ty Lawson, soon to gain Wilson Chandler?

US PresswireThe trainers for the Denver Nuggets have got to be working overtime these days. The team already has Danilo Gallinari, Nene and Rudy Fernandez out with injuries. And now the team must add point guard Ty Lawson to the list. This is a big part of why the team has lost 10 of its last 14 games.

During the second quarter of the Nuggets' 103-101 overtime win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Lawson was sidelined with a left ankle sprain. He's now listed as day-to-day.

Reinforcements are coming for the Nuggets, though. The paper notes that Wilson Chandler is back from China and was at the game Monday night. A "contract is being worked out" so that Chandler can play for the Nuggets before the season is out," the Post reports. Chandler seemed to think that could happen in the next week, according to the paper.

The 24-year-old Lawson, who is now considered day-to-day, is averaging 15.4 points and 6.1 assists per game.

    • Rams WR Brandon Lloyd intrigued by Patriots?

US PresswireWide receiver Brandon Lloyd will soon be a free agent and he's saying that he's open to returning to the St. Louis Rams. But the Boston Herald has it that when Lloyd spoke on PFT Live, "you could almost hear Lloyd light up over the phone" when the subject of the New England Patriots came up. The paper points out the Lloyd has also mentioned previously that he wouldn't mind reuniting with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

"Yes, I find that very interesting," Lloyd told PFT Live when asked about the Pats, the Herald reports. "I would like to entertain that and see where that goes. There's no bones about that. I've been very successful in Josh McDaniels' offense, I really admire Tom Brady, I admire that organization and how they run things over there, so I'd definitely be interested in hearing how I could possibly fit into that equation."

All the Pats fans that were screaming about Wes Welker dropping that pass in the Super Bowl have got a very good idea of how Lloyd could

    • Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan headed out of town?

US PresswireTennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan has won the team's Walter Payton Man of the Year award for the past two years. Since being selected seventh in the 2006 draft out of Samford University, he has 472 tackles, 14 interceptions, six sacks and one visit to the Pro Bowl. Now he may be leaving town.

The Tennessean reports that "there's been no progress in negotiations" on a new contract for the 28-year-old and he's put his house up for sale as he is "still convinced he won't be back with the Titans for 2012."

Agent Terry Watson and team execs are supposed to meet up at the NFL combine later this week to discuss the contract further. "It is more of a wait-and-see situation, depending on how the conversation goes when we do meet," Watson said Monday, according to the Tennessean. "It is up to the Titans to be able to show Cortland what their mindset is, where things are. And the only way that can be done is through the use of numbers composed in a contract of some sort, and that

    • Spurs’ Manu Ginobili and Tiago Splitter out two weeks

US PresswireSan Antonio Spurs shooting guard Manu Ginobili was feeling Sunday that the injury he suffered Saturday wasn't as bad as he originally feared. But now the fella who missed 22 games to start the season has a little more info and knows that he'll be out for two weeks, according to the San Antonio Express News. Joining him on the injury list for that same amount of time, the paper notes, is Tiago Splitter.

An MRI Monday showed Ginobili has a left internal oblique strain while backup center Splitter has a right calf strain, the paper reports.

"I felt something, and when I went to shoot the free throws, I felt something strange, a little pop," Splitter said, according to the Express-News. "They say it's small, not a big deal. That's the good news."

One thing going for the Spurs, who sit atop the Southwest Division and are in second place behind the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference, is that the whole league will be taking a five-day break for All-Star weekend so that minimizes

US PresswireDefenseman Pavel Kubina has been in the league since 1997 and has played for three different organizations: the Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs and Atlanta Thrashers. So he's been around long enough to know what he likes in a hockey team.

Traded on Saturday to the Philadelphia Flyers, the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Kubina is already saying that he'd like to stick around there for a while, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

"If I play well for this team and they want me, I don't want to go anywhere and test the water," Kubina said, the paper reports. "That is the way I am and hopefully, it will go that way."

    • Yankees met CC Sabathia to discuss his weight

US PresswireNew York Yankees GM Brian Cashman noticed that his ace, CC Sabathia, was putting on some pounds during the second half of last season, a fact that may have helped cause the knee problems Sabathia suffered along with the not completely stellar finish to the season.

Cashman let the team's trainers handle it, he said, but then got involved once he got Sabathia signed in the offseason to a five-year, $122 million extension, the New York Daily News reports. At that point, Cashman called Sabathia in to have a meeting to discuss his growing frame with him, trainer Steve Donahue and manager Joe Girardi. According to the Daily News, Cashman called the meeting "tough" and "awkward."

Sabathia seems to have responded well even if he didn't think the weight was an issue: "It's up to me to take away any possible factors," he said, the paper reports, "and be ready and strong the whole year."

Sabathia went 19-8 with a 3.00 ERA last season. After Aug. 1, though, Sabathia went 3-3 with a 4.30 ERA but

    • Bulls coveting Lakers’ Pau Gasol?

US PresswireThe Chicago Bulls have been informed by star point guard Derrick Rose "that he wants to play with Pau Gasol if Chicago is able to swing a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers for the veteran power forward," according to SheridanHoops.com.  "He hasn't said so publicly, but he has made that known privately," a source tells the site.

The Bulls would send Carlos Boozer and another player to L.A. in the deal, the site reports.

Gasol nearly went to the Houston Rockets before the season got started as part of the three-team deal that would have had Chris Paul moving to the Lakers, but then commissioner David Stern nixed that deal. Since then, folks have wondered if and when Gasol would be dealt.

However, Sports Illustrated has it that Lakers GM Milt Kupchak is saying that he may not make any deals before the trading deadline.

"Of course we'll talk to a lot of teams [about trades], like everybody else does, leading up until the trade deadline to see if there is a way to improve the team," Kupchak

    • Raul Ibanez joining Yankees soon?

US PresswireNow that A.J. Burnett has been shipped off to western Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to pay $13 million of the $33 million owed to him over the next two seasons, the New York Yankees are "closing in on adding Raul Ibanez as the left-handed hitting option for their designated hitter role," according to MLB.com.

"The preference would be to find someone from the left side that can do some damage against right-handed pitching, but ... in the event we have injuries that hit in-season, that my manager could put out for defense," Yankees GM Briand Cashman said on Sunday, the site reports.

The Yankees will also likely re-sign 34-year-old Eric Chavez to serve as a backup corner infielder.

Chavez batted .263 with two homers and 26 RBIs in 58 games for New York last year. The 39-year-old Ibanez was the starting left fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies last year, batting .245 with 20 homers and 84 RBIs in 144 total games.

    • Is Cardinals’ Yadier Molina headed the way of Albert Pujols?

US PresswireWhen spring training got rolling last year, Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals hadn't worked out a long-term deal and the slugging first baseman headed off to bigger dollar signs with the Los Angeles Angels after St. Louis wrapped up its World Series win.

Now the Cards have got longtime catcher Yadier Molina headed into the season in the last year of his contract and talks over a longtime deal have broken down. MLB.com reports that the Cards and Molina "have put discussions about a contract extension on hold after the two sides were unable to reach an agreement during a recent two-week period of talks."

The 29-year-old Molina, who made his big-league debut with the Cards back in 2004, batted. .305 with 14 homers and 32 doubles last season. He'll make $7 million this season.

Pujols didn't want to discus a new deal once spring training started, but Molina is open to that. "I think they would have to come to me and start talking to me," said Molina, according to the site. "I'm open
