    • Hornets packaging David West in a sign-and-trade?

      West, David

At least five teams would like to sign free-agent power forward David West, whose season ended in March with a torn ACL in his left knee.

According to CBSSports.com, four of those teams — the Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks -- don't have enough room under the salary cap to bring West onboard. The good news for them, though, is that the Hornets are willing to do a sign-and-trade deal with the 31-year-old two-time All-Star, who averaged 18.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game last season.

The other team that actually has room for West under the cap is the Indiana Pacers, CBS reports.

    • Chris Paul won’t sign extension with Celtics, Clippers, or Kings

US PresswireThe Boston Celtics are "willing to trade Rajon Rondo and perhaps Glen Davis" to the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for Chris Paul, the Boston Herald reports. However, the 26-year-old Paul doesn't want to join the Celts, the paper reports, and won't sign an extension with the team if he is traded there.

Two other teams that would like to snag Paul are also dealing with the news that he doesn't plan on signing extensions with them, either. NBA.com reports that Paul doesn't want to "commit to signing a contract extension after this season with either the Golden State Warriors or Los Angeles Clippers."

The Los Angeles Lakers are also going after Paul and "it was not known Wednesday if Paul had similar reluctance to sign an extension" with them, NBA.com reports. His resistance to sign an extension will make trading him more difficult.

Don't take it personally, fans of the Celts, Warriors and Clippers. Paul's refusal to sign extensions with those teams may purely be a financial decision.

    • Kings close to locking up Chuck Hayes?

US PresswireChuck Hayes has been toiling for the Houston Rockets for six seasons and now appears ready to move on. The word from ESPN is that the 6-6, 238-pounder has been offered a four-year, $20 million contract by the Sacramento Kings and the team feels he'll accept it.

Fox Sports Houston has it that Hayes would like to return to the Rockets but doesn't want to wait while the team sorts out all of its other free-agent possibilities.

"I talked to [Rockets general manager] Daryl Morey tonight and they need more time," said Hayes' agent, Calvin Andrews, on Wednesday, according to Fox. "So they are asking us for more time. I don't know if Chuck can give them more time beyond tomorrow morning probably. I think tomorrow is D-Day."

Hayes averaged 7.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 28:06 minutes per game last season.

    • Albert Pujols down to Cardinals and Marlins?

Pujols, Albert on baseHow much is Albert Pujols enjoying this? It hasn't been that long since Pujols got his second taste of what it feels like to be the last team standing as his St. Louis Cardinals won its second World Series during his time with the team. Since then, he's been the toast of every town he's visited, least of all not Dallas, where baseball's winter meetings are currently taking place.

There, Pujols has received at least two 10-year offers from the free-spending Miami Marlins and Cardinals, as well as possibly from a third team, according to Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown. ESPN has it that Pujols is making his decision between Miami and St. Louis, but it's not because other teams don't want a piece of Pujols.

USA Today reports that Pujols has three offers for 10 years and more than $200 million. One came from the Marlins Tuesday, the second came from the Cardinals as it upped its nine-month-old original offer, and the third from a "mystery" team.

Brown notes that the Los Angeles and Chicago Cubs

    • Mets going after Jose Reyes again

Reyes, Jose (bumming out)Baseball's winter meetings, which tend to include lots of player signings and rumors alike, kick off on Monday in Dallas. One name that will be coming up is that of free agent shortstop Jose Reyes.

New York Mets GM Sandy Alderson "plans to reopen the lines of communication with Reyes' agents" while at the meetings, if not before, according to MLB.com.

"I certainly would hope that we'll have conversations ... by the time we get to Dallas, or at Dallas," Alderson said Thursday. "I do expect to have them over the next handful of days."

The Miami Marlins have reportedly offered Reyes a six-year, $90 million deal, the site notes, and the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies "have also displayed tepid interest" in Reyes.

"There's just a general uncertainty about the marketplace and where values are," Alderson said, the site reports. "It may have something to do with the top free agents not having moved -- [Albert] Pujols and [Prince] Fielder and Jose Reyes. It may just be the dynamic
