    • Andrew Bynum getting injection during All-Star weekend

US PresswireLos Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum will start off his All-Star weekend getting an injection of Synvisc, which serves as a lubricant, into his right knee, according to ESPN Los Angeles.

Two summers ago, Bynum had surgery to help fix up torn cartilage and the 24-year-old wears a brace on the knee during games these days, the site notes.

Bynum will sit out practice Saturday for the All-Star game while recuperating and then start the game on Sunday, according to ESPN.

Bynum has played in 30 of the Lakers' 34 games this season, averaging 16.3 points and 12.8 rebounds per game, both career highs.

    • Senators lose Craig Anderson to hand injury

US PresswireThe Ottawa Senators are currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, but their playoff hopes were dealt a serious blow late Wednesday night when goalie Craig Anderson "suffered a serious cut while preparing food at his home" after blocking 33 shots as his team took down the Washington Capitals 5-2 that night, according to the Ottawa Sun.

The word is that he'll definitely be out for 10 days and possibly more, the Sun reports. The worst-case scenario, a source tells the paper, is that he could be out 6-8 weeks.

"GM Bryan Murray could be forced to go shopping for a goalie — with Monday's trade deadline fast approaching," the Sun notes.

Anderson is 29-19-6 this season with a 2.85 goals-against average and three shutouts.

    • No-trade clause holding up Ryan Zimmerman’s extension?

US PresswireRyan Zimmerman's family lives in Virginia and the 27-year-old has said that he'd like to finish up his career with the Washington Nationals. But right now he's got two years left on his contract and he has imposed a deadline of Saturday to work out a new contract or let it go until the end of the season.

The Washington Post reports that the two sides were trying to hammer out a deal Thursday, but there are "multiple major hurdles" still in the way of making it happen. The biggest of those, the Post reports, is whether or not to give Zimmerman a full no-trade clause, something the team wouldn't do for any player under former team president, Stan Kasten.

"We're working extremely hard at it," GM Mike Rizzo said, according to the Post. "When both sides want something and they're working at it, yeah, I'm hopeful. . . . We've got a player who wants to be in Washington, a GM and an ownership that wants him here. We're working hard to get one of our franchise players signed here for the long

    • Joe Torre out of Dodgers bidding

US PresswireThe 71-year-old Joe Torre left his job with Major League Baseball to put his efforts into trying to purchase the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he and his bidding partner, Los Angeles developer Rick Caruso, have withdrawn from the process, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"Caruso and Torre cited owner Frank McCourt's refusal to include the Dodger Stadium parking lots in the sale, according to a letter, dated last Friday, that the men sent to Major League Baseball," the Times reports.

If McCourt decides to include the parking lots in the sale, Caruso and Torre are expected to get back into the bidding, the paper notes. A source to the Times says that McCourt is saying that he has at least one bid that will allow him to keep the parking lots for himself. According to the Times, McCourt plans to develop the lots. If he does that, the team's new ownership is going to have to find a new place for all those Dodgers fans to park.

Torre, of course, led the New York Yankees to four World Series

    • Yankees’ Russell Martin seeking contract extension

US PresswireNew York Yankees catcher Russell Martin will be a free agent at year's end and the 29-year-old would rather sign an extension with the team than be searching for a deal next winter. But the two sides are "far apart" at this point, according to the New York Daily News.

"It's too early to say if we'll be able to do something," Matt Colleran said Thursday, the paper reports. "What they want to do is not something we want to do, and what we want to do is not something they want to do. But we'll continue talking."

GM Brian Cashman said that he is willing to make a commitment to Russell Martin, but only under the right circumstances.

Martin batted .237 with 18 homers and 65 RBIs last season.

    • Packers tagging QB Matt Flynn?

US PresswireThe Green Bay Packers signed tight end Jermichael Finley to a two-year, $14 million deal Wednesday. According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, this "opened the option" to put the franchise tag on backup quarterback Matt Flynn and trade him. As the paper points out, though, if a trade doesn't work out or if Flynn can't figure out a contract with a new team, the Packers will be stuck paying him $14.4 million.

"The tag is looking like a real possibility," the paper reports. "A front office executive for an NFL team said the league doesn't discourage tag-and-trade strongly enough to prevent the Packers from doing it with Flynn if they think it's their best move."

The deadline for franchising a player is March 5.

The 26-year-old, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2008 draft out of Louisiana State, has appeared in 34 games over the past four seasons, completing 82 passes for 1,015 yards and nine touchdowns along with five interceptions.

    • Nets’ Kris Humphries returning after All-Star break

US PresswireNew Jersey Nets forward Kris Humphries sat out Thursday's 108-91 loss to the Orlando Magic with a strained left calf. The Newark Star-Ledger reports that Humphries should be back in the lineup after the All-Star break.

"I think he did it couple of games ago, but he's been managing it and fortunately, he was able to play for us against the Knicks,'' coach Avery Johnson said, according to the paper. "But if he's got to miss a game, that's because he's injured — he plays with a lot of different ailments and aches and pains, so he's definitely injured when he misses a game.''

The 27-year-old Humphries is averaging 13.6 points and 10.5 rebounds this season.

    • Flyers’ James van Riemsdyk hearing name in rumors

US PresswirePhiladelphia Flyers left wing James van Riemsdyk is in his third season in the NHL and there's something he's  experiencing for the first time: being the subject of trade rumors.

And he doesn't like it. The Philadelphia Daily News reports that the 22-year-old New Jersey native is hearing his name a lot this week as the team takes a Canadian swing to play the Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. According to the paper, his name "has been linked to" the Columbus Blue Jackets, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.

And why not? The guy put in seven goals in 11 games during last year's playoffs. He has 11 goals and 13 assists so far this season, along with a bunch of injuries.

"It's clear that Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren hasn't exactly hung up the phone when the conversation turns his way," the paper notes.

    • Heat’s big names wooed Baron Davis

US PresswireJust a few weeks ago, New York Knicks fans were anxious to have point guard Baron Davis heal up and get onto the court. Of course, that was before Jeremy Lin began starting games and tearing through opponents' defenses.

Now Davis is back in action, he is coming off the bench, a fact that doesn't seem to bother him a bit. "It's my 13th year in the league, so I'm not fighting for anything but a championship," Davis said, according to ESPN New York. "That's all that matters."

Thursday, the team takes on the Miami Heat, a team whose biggest stars — LeBron James and Dwyane Wade -- spent some energy wooing him after he was waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Davis said, according to the site.

"I spoke to Pat Riley. D-Wade, LeBron, they texted me and asked me what was up," Davis said, ESPN reports. "But I pretty much knew I wanted to come [to New York] and play in the Garden and play in front of these fans and play for this organization. I always wanted to play here, so this was really like my

    • Seven teams interested in adding Wilson Chandler?

US PresswireIt was pretty much presumed that when restricted free agent Wilson Chandler got back from China that he would sign on with his former team, the Denver Nuggets. That may happen, but Chandler has some other options and is checking them out, according to Sports Illustrated.

Chandler visited with the Toronto Raptors Tuesday, the site notes, and his agent, Chris Luchey, claims to have interest from six other teams.

"We are exploring all avenues," Luchey said, according to the site. "Our talks [with Denver] thus far have been OK. It's just the nature [of free agency]. They have options and Will has options."

"[Nuggets GM Masai] Ujiri -- according to Luchey -- has made it clear he has no interest in signing him for only the rest of the season and that he wants a long-term deal," Sports Illustrated wrote.

Chandler has till the end of the month to sign an offer sheet with another team, the site notes, and the Nuggets will have the chance to match the offer. After that, the Nuggets are the only
