    • Magic undecided on Dwight Howard, pursuing Steve Nash?

US PresswireNow that the Orlando Magic are finished hosting this year's NBA All-Star game, the Eastern Conference's fifth-place team has to figure out if it's going to deal Dwight Howard or not.

Howard's mother told TNT Craig Sager that she'd like her 6-11 little fella to stay in Orlando, according to the Sporting News.

But the 26-year-old isn't under mama's thumb anymore. "That's my mom's opinion," Howard said after the game, according to the Orlando Sentinel. "… I don't want to talk about that stuff right now."

The Magic has till March 15 to deal Howard. Team CEO Alex Martins insisted Sunday night that the team has not made a decision about whether they will trade Howard, the Sentinel reports, adding that the Magic apparently are holding out hope they can hold on to him until the end of the season and convince him to stay.

Meanwhile, RealGM.com has it from multiple sources that the Magic will be "aggressively" pursuing eight-time All-Star Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns before the deadline.

    • Mets’ trading of David Wright ‘inevitable’?

US PresswireThis season, New York Mets third baseman David Wright is finishing out a deal that he signed in 2006 (though there is an option for 2013). According to the New York Post, Wright is trying to re-establish his value this season, "hoping to capitalize on those nearer Citi Field fences to return to the land of 30 homers, 100 RBIs and a .300 average."

The Post points out that putting up those kinds of numbers again will "make him more likely to be traded either this July or, more probably, after the Mets pick up his $16 million option for 2013."

The paper labels a Wright trade as inevitable, another thing Mets fans can be unhappy about.

The 29-year-old Wright, a five-time All-Star who has twice won both Gold Gloves and Silver Slugger awards, hit .254 last season with 14 homers and 23 doubles in 102 games.

    • Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews missing sixth straight game?

US PresswireThe Chicago Blackhawks have been without captain Jonathan Toews for the last five games and have gone 1-4 and are now in sixth place in the Western Conference. The team needs to stop losing since it is only a few points away from dropping out of playoff contention, but it isn't clear if Toews will be back soon.

The Hawks could get help before the trading deadline comes Monday afternoon, but it is hoping that Toews can return from his upper-body injury, which is "possibly related to concussion symptoms," according to the Chicago Tribune.

"[Toews] is our best player overall," winger Viktor Stalberg said, according to the Tribune. "He does the little things so well [and] … he's missed in the locker room. Hopefully, we'll get him back here soon and it will help make us better."

Chicago takes on the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday and coach Joel Quenneville said that it is "undetermined" whether Toews will be ready to go, especially since his star hasn't even started skating again. Toews has

    • Warriors’ Stephen Curry out Tuesday?

US PresswireThe All-Star break couldn't have come at a better time for Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry. He left Wednesday's game against the Phoenix Suns early after injuring his right foot on an attempted layup. He tried to come back at the very end of the first half, but it didn't work out.

The San Jose Mercury News now has it that Curry has had an MRI and the injury has been identified as a sprained deltoid ligament.

"I'm hopeful I can play Tuesday" when the Warriors visit the Indiana Pacers, Curry said Sunday, according to the Mercury News. "It feels better. Rehab is going well. Just have to see how it responds the next couple of days. I'm confident I won't miss much time, if any."

The 23-year-old is averaging 16.5 points, 6.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game this season.

    • Reds and Sean Marshall close to extension?

US PresswireLefty reliever Sean Marshall appeared in 78 games for the Chicago Cubs, going 6-6 with 34 holds and five saves in his sixth season with the team. The Cincinnati Reds sent lefty Travis Wood, outfielder Dave Sappelt and infielder Ronald Torreyes to the Windy City on Dec. 23 to snag Marshall and are now hoping he'll stick around Cincy for a while. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds and Marshall are close to signing a contract extension.

"We're talking about it," Marshall said, according to the paper. "We might have something Monday."

The 29-year-old has 56 holds in the last two yeas and has struck out 169 over 150.1 innings in that time as well.

"That's one of the things we said we wanted to do when he traded for him," Reds GM Walt Jocketty said, according to the paper. "We want to get it done sooner than later. We'd like to get it done before games start."

    • Braves’ Tommy Hanson returning from concussion Tuesday?

US PresswireAtlanta Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson suffered a concussion after his Infiniti M45 blew out a tire and was wrecked last Monday, but may be ready to get back to full workouts Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Hanson ran a little bit and spent about five minutes playing catch Sunday, the first time the Braves pitcher suited up and got on the field since suffering the Grade 1 concussion, the paper reports.

Hanson will likely take the concussion tests on Monday or Tuesday, manager Fredi Gonzalez said, according to the paper, marking Hanson's second time taking it since the accident. If everything checks out, he could be involved in full workouts on Tuesday, the Journal-Constitution notes.

"It's like holding a thoroughbred back, he's ready to get going," Gonzalez said, the paper reports. "Which is a good sign."

The 25-year-old went 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA last year.

    • Twins reliever Joel Zumaya’s career may be over

US PresswireReliever Joel Zumaya has spent his whole six-year career with the Detroit Tigers, missing last season and the final four months of the 2010 season with elbow problems.

The 27-year-old was signed by the Minnesota Twins in January to a deal that was set to pay him anywhere between $800,000 and $1.7 million. The Twins are going to have to pay out only $400,000 of that now, because Zumaya unsurprisingly has hurt his elbow again and it will cause him to be out for the season and possibly could end his career, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Zumaya suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament, the paper reports, and will have to decide whether he wants to have Tommy John surgery or not.

"It's unfortunate," Twins GM Terry Ryan said, according to the Pioneer Press. "We took a risk, and it didn't work."

As a rookie in 2006, Zumaya threw a fastball that sometimes topped 100 mph for 83 1/3 innings and struck out 97.

    • Falcons hope to retain CB Brent Grimes long-term

US PresswireCornerback Brent Grimes may only be 5-10, but the Atlanta Falcons are hoping he'll cast his shadow in the Peach State for many years to come. ESPN reports that the team is aggressively trying to get Grimes to sign to a long-term deal.

Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff told reporters at the scouting combine that "serious talks had begun with Grimes' agents" and that the team wasn't "wasting time with our discussions," according to the site.

The 28-year-old Grimes who went undrafted out of Shippensburg University in 2006, joined the Falcons in 2007 and has had 241 tackles, 13 interceptions and one trip to the Pro Bowl since. Last season, he was involved with 49 tackles and one interception.

    • Seahawks using franchise tag on RB Marshawn Lynch?

US PresswireRunning back Marshawn Lynch has only spent one full season with the Seattle Seahawks after being traded early in the 2010-11 season from the Buffalo Bills.

Seattle has seen enough of the 25-year-old Oakland native that the team knows it would like to keep him around. ProFootballTalk reports that a rumor is circulating that the two sides are close to agreeing on a long-term contract. However, a source to the site says the rumor is not true and "though the two sides are talking, the breakthrough still hasn't come."

If a deal can't get done by March 5, the Seahawks are expected to use the franchise tag on Lynch, the site notes.

Lynch, who has been to the Pro Bowl twice in his five seasons of work, rushed for a career-high 1,204 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season. He scored another as a receiver and gained 212 yards in the air as well.

    • St. Louis Rams dealing No. 2 pick?

US PresswireThe Indianapolis Colts have the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft and are presumably going to select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. Former Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III will possibly be picked second, but it remains to be seen exactly which team ends up with that selection.

ESPN reports that the St. Louis Rams, the team currently with that selection, are willing to deal the pick for the right package and multiple teams already have had preliminary discussions with St. Louis about the possibility of trading for the pick.

The site notes that a few teams that will be looking for quarterbacks in the draft include the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks.
