    • Oilers’ Ryan Smyth interested in joining Rangers?

US PresswireEdmonton Oilers left wing Ryan Smyth was drafted by Glen Sather and worked under him for five years before Sather left to join the New York Rangers.

Now that the Rangers are at the top of the chart in their conference and the Oilers are near the bottom in theirs, Smyth, who has a no-trade clause in his contract, might want to rejoin Sather. A "well-placed" source tells the New York Post reports that Smyth "would give serious consideration to waiving his no-move clause in order to pursue a Cup on Broadway."

The paper also hears that the Rangers want to add "both scoring punch and a defenseman in advance of the Feb. 27 trade deadline."

The soon-to-be 36-year-old Smyth, who is in the final year of his contract, has 16 goals and 18 assists to his name this season.

    • NFL considering addition of two teams

US PresswireThe city of Los Angeles has been without a pro football team since the mid-'90s when the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams both left the area. L.A. has been trying to get a team to commit to moving there for several years now. The San Diego Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and St. Louis Rams have all been mentioned over the past few years as possibilities to make the move.

It's also been rumored that if no team wants to go to the City of Angels, the NFL could just start a new team in town. Now word comes from CBSSports.com that if the league adds a new team in L.A., it will likely also add another team somewhere else in order to keep things balanced. Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday that the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams" and "we probably don't want to go to 33" if the NFL decides expansion is a good choice.

Goodell may not have meant to do it, but now other cities will likely start pitching the league on how they would be the best choice for

    • Peyton Manning and Colts meeting next week

US PresswireNow that Peyton Manning's doctor has cleared him to play next season, his situation with his current employer, the Indianapolis Colts, has gotten a little murkier. The team has till March 8 to decided whether it is going to pay the four-time NFL MVP a $28 million bonus and keep him on the roster or not.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Manning and the team "are expected to meet next week to discuss Manning's future with the team." However, owner Jim Irsay said that the final decision "probably will go into early March" since "it's a serious medical thing."

The Star notes that Manning "has been going through strenuous throwing sessions, most recently Tuesday at the Colts' complex and Thursday at an undisclosed location."

Manning also made it known this week that he has no plans to retire. Whether the Colts let him go or not, Manning surely will want to show the NFL that he's still got a lot left to offer.

In the meantime, he gets to watch his brother, Eli Manning, see if he can win a

    • Nationals trying to trade John Lannan

US PresswireThe Washington Nationals made themselves a little stronger Thursday by adding Edwin Jackson to their rotation for one season for around $10 million. The word from Fox Sports is that the team is also "aggressively" trying to unload John Lannan from its rotation as well.

The 27-year-old lefty, who lost his arbitration case with the team and will be paid $5 million this season rather than the $5.7 million that he wanted, went 10-13 with a  3.70 ERA last year (when he was paid $2.75 million).

Fox reports that Jackson had a few three-year offers, but decided to go with one so that he can hopefully stuff his stats this season and re-enter the free-agent market at the end of the 2012 season.

    • Manny Ramirez joining Athletics or Orioles?

US PresswireManny Ramirez has played 19 seasons in the big leagues and he'd like to come out of retirement for at least one more. The slugger retired last April after playing only five games for the Tampa Bay Rays (one hit, one RBI, four strikeouts) because he was about to be hit with a 100-game ban for testing positive for performance—enhancing drugs.

Fox Sports reports that the teams that have the most interest in signing the 39-year-old are the Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics.

Whoever he signs with, Ramirez will only need to sit out for 50 games due to an agreement between the players union and the league.

The 12-time All-Star has been on two World Series-winning squads, knocked out 555 homers, and maintained a career batting average of .312.

    • Rangers and Cardinals not signing Roy Oswalt?

US PresswireNow that Edwin Jackson has signed on with the Washington Nationals, Roy Oswalt remains alone at the top of the best unsigned starting-pitcher free agent. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, one of Oswalt's hoped-for destinations, the Texas Rangers, is probably not going to happen.

"The Rangers … appear to be moving away from the idea of adding free-agent starter Roy Oswalt," the paper reports. A source tells the Express-News that the Rangers have "all but decided against the right-hander." According to the paper, Oswalt told the team he doesn't have any interest in being a reliever and would like a one-year, $10 million deal.

"It's enticing when you have a veteran starter who wants to pitch for you," general manager Jon Daniels said Thursday, the paper reports. "The reality is we have a lot of starting pitchers that all have high upsides, and we want to give them the ball."

Meanwhile, Fox Sports has it that Oswalt's other preferred destination, the St. Louis Cardinals, "have not

    • Wes Welker plans return to Patriots

US PresswireNew England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has only one more game to play before he becomes a free agent, but Pats fans shouldn't start worrying just yet.

NESN reports that Welker is saying that he aims to return to the Patriots' roster next season: "I plan on being back," Welker said, the site reports. "I'm not really too worried about that right now. I'm fully concentrated on this game and what we have to do, but I plan on being back."

The site notes that Patriots owner Robert Kraft recently said that he would like Welker to be back next season: "I think Wes wants to be here, and we want him here," Kraft said in late January, the site notes. "Hopefully when the season ends, both sides will be wise enough to consummate something. He's pretty special. Anytime there's a player on this team I can look eye to eye and be at the same level, he's an important guy."

The 30-year-old Welker, a four-time Pro Bowler who went undrafted in 2004 out of Texas Tech, has been with the team since

    • Heat made offers to Kenyon Martin and Joel Pryzbilla

US PresswireThe Miami Heat got lots of grief last year for not having an effective big man on the roster, particularly after the team lost the Finals to the Dallas Mavericks and Tyson Chandler.

The Heat, currently fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 16-6 record, still aren't happy with the big guys on their roster and ESPN reports that the team has made offers to 7-1 Joel Przybilla and 6-9 Kenyon Martin, both of whom "could make their decisions by the end of the week" as to where they want to spend the rest of the season.

Przybilla, who was the ninth overall pick in the 2000 draft by the Houston Rockets, is deciding between the Chicago Bulls and Heat, his agent tells the site. Martin's agent tells ESPN that his client has a few more teams than that as possibilities.

    • Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw practices despite foot pain

US PresswireSince New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw re-injured his surgically repaired foot halfway through the season, he has practiced about once a week, the New York Post reports.

He wasn't expected to practice with the team Wednesday so coach Tom Coughllin was surprised to see Bradshaw out on the field at practice, according to NFC pool reporter Peter King.

Bradshaw told trainer Ronnie Barnes that he wanted to be in on the first practice of Super Bowl week, King repots.

"I just hope he's OK tomorrow,'' said Coughlin, according to King.

"For the average person who stubbed their toe on the bed, he feels that way all day long," Giants running backs coach Jerald Ingram said, the Post notes.

The 25-year-old Bradshaw rushed for 659 yards and nine touchdowns this season, though he hasn't scored yet this postseason.

    • Donovan McNabb has three teams targeted for return

US PresswireIn the last three seasons, quarterback Donovan McNabb has been sent packing by three different organizations: First his longtime employer, the Philadelphia Eagles, sent him off to a division rival, the Washington Redskins. The Skins went with McNabb for 13 games and then let him go off to the Minnesota Vikings, who had him appear in six games before he was released partway through last season.

McNabb isn't ready to hang up his helmet, though. The 35-year-old six-time Pro Bowler has his eye on three different NFL teams that he thinks could use his services, according to NFL.com.

"I see three teams in the NFL, right now, that I feel like I can add a little bit of flavor to it from what they have," McNabb said, according to the site. "I won't mention those teams. But, if the phone rings, there will be a lot of decisions to make on that."

In his six games with the Vikes last year, the Chicago native threw 156 passes and connected on 94 of them for 1,025 yards and four touchdowns. He also
