    • Rockets lose Kyle Lowry to elbow injury

US PresswireThe Houston Rockets managed to get by the Portland Trail Blazers 103-96 Wednesday night but lost point guard Kyle Lowry along the way.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Lowry headed to the locker room early with an elbow injury suffered in the third quarter.

"I tried to throw a pass to Jordan [Hill] on a cut," Lowry said Wednesday, according to the Chronicle. "I kind of hyper-extended it, strained it a bit. I just have to do treatment. You know me. I don't want to sit out too many games. I don't want to sit out games at all. I'll see how I feel tomorrow and get treatment in the morning and see how it feels."

The 25-year-old Philadelphia native, who was selected in the first round of the 2006 draft by the Memphis Grizzlies out of Villanova, is averaging 14.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game this season.

    • Roy Oswalt talks with Boston not progressing

US PresswireThe Boston Red Sox have been talking to Roy Oswalt off and on this winter, but it doesn't appear that a deal will be made.

A major-league source to the Boston Herald says that there is "no sense of progress" in the talks between the two sides.

The paper notes that Bobby Valentine is feeling fine with the current rotation, which consists of Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz and likely Daniel Bard and Alfredo Aceves.

"I'm comfortable until I'm not comfortable," Valentine said, according to the Herald. "I like the people we have coming to camp. If nothing changes, if all I can deal with is their past, it's probably not enough. But the world champions evolved as the season went on last year. The American League champions evolved as the year went on. Why should I think that we should see a finished product now?"

Oswalt went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA and two stints on the disabled list with a hurting back last year for the Philadelphia Phillies.

    • Hurt foot sidelining ironman Henrik Sedin?

US PresswireThe captain and leading scorer of the Vancouver Canucks, Henrik Sedin, has played in 552 consecutive NHL games, but he may end up missing Thursday's matchup against the Minnesota Wild.

The Vancouver Sun reports that Sedin was wearing a walking boot on his right foot when the team arrived in Minnesota Wednesday afternoon, and had a CT scan done.

The injury happened in Tuesday night's 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators when a shot from defenseman Kevin Klein hit him in the foot, the Sun notes.

Coach Alain Vigneault said Wednesday that X-rays done the day before on the foot were "inconclusive," the paper notes: "They couldn't tell from the X-ray and he was just obviously in a lot of pain, so we'll just do a follow-up right now," he said.

Sedin has 11 goals and 46 assists so far this season.

    • Plaxico Burress wants to join Eagles?

US PresswireThe last time the New York Giants won the Super Bowl, wide receiver Plaxico Burress caught the winning touchdown catch and was hailed a hero in the Big Apple. Since then, of course, he went to jail for a bit after shooting himself in the leg at a nightclub when he was trying to find the gun in his pants.

Burress came out of prison and spent last season playing for the New York Jets, where he pulled in 45 catches for 612 yards and eight touchdowns over 16 games. Nielson Research also named him one of America's most disliked athletes, Forbes reports.

Now the free agent is reportedly interested in leaving New York altogether. NBC Philadelphia sports reporter Howard Eskin bumped into Burress at the Super Bowl and Burress told him that he'd like to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. "Badly!" Eskin tweeted.

That would mean that Burress would join forces with the man who was at the top of that most disliked list: quarterback Michael Vick

    • Wilson Chandler wants to return to the Nuggets

US PresswireForward Wilson Chandler is still finishing out his contract with China's Zhejiang Guangsha, but when he is free to return to the NBA, he plans to sign on with his former team, the Denver Nuggets, according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears.

Chandler's agent, Chris Luchey, told Spears that there is "significant interest" from other teams in Chandler, but the 6-8 24-year-old prefers to be back in the Mile High City.

"Wilson likes their direction and the stabilization of their roster in Denver with the young talent," Luchey told Spears. "He wants to see how they develop as a team. It's a unique situation. The ball is in their court. If Wilson is comfortable, he will be a part of their core group."

And Denver GM Masai Ujiri, who is planning to visit Chandler in China for the regular-season finale on Feb. 15 or during the postseason, says the team is interested in binging back the restricted free agent, Spears reports.

    • No timetable for Kyrie Irving’s return from concussion

US PresswireThe Cleveland Cavaliers, currently in fourth place in the Central Division, surprisingly took down the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Clippers 99-92 Wednesday night and they did it without the help of rookie sensation Kyrie Irving.

The 19-year-old who was drafted first overall this past summer was pulled from the lineup before the opening tipoff when team docs diagnosed him with a concussion, the Associated Press reports. He was apparently kneed in the head in the Cavs' 107-91 loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday.

"He went out and warmed up and said it felt like his head was on fire," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said, the AP reports. "He says he's doing fine."

Irving is averaging 18 points, tops in the league for rookies, and 5.1 assists per game. The AP notes that there is no timetable for when he will return to action.

    • Celtics’ Rajon Rondo headed to Lakers?

US PresswireThe Los Angeles Lakers are in need of a point guard and the word is that the team wouldn't mind doing a deal with the Boston Celtics to land Rajon Rondo.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak tells Lakers.com that there is definitely something he'd like to do before the trading deadline: "If there were a way for us to get a 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard we'd love to do it … but that's not likely in February. So you look at other alternatives, and see if it's better than what you have. That's all."

As Hoopsworld points out, Rondo is the only 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard in the league right now. Sources also tell the site that, in exchange for Rondo, the Celtics "have interest" in forward/center Pau Gasol, who has two years left on his contract after this season.

Gasol is averaging 16.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 0.5 blocks per game. Rondo is averaging 13.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game for the Celts.

    • Rangers sign Elvis Andrus for three years?

US PresswireTexas Rangers GM Jon Daniels isn't talking about it, but the Dallas Morning News hears from an inside source that the team has signed shortstop Elvis Andrus for three more seasons.

In the three years Andrus has been in the bigs, he has stolen 102 bases, scored 256 runs, batted .271, and made it to one All-Star game.

The 23-year-old Venezuelan was scheduled to go to arbitration with the team this week. Andrus was asking for $3.6 million while the team was offering $2.65 million. The Morning News has it that the three-year deal, which will be finalized when Andrus passes a physical, is worth $15 million.

    • Clippers’ Chauncey Billups aiming for return

      US Presswire

When the Los Angeles Clippers claimed veteran point guard Chauncey Billups off waivers from the New York Knicks just before the season got underway, it wasn't even clear if he was going to show up since Billups had just told Yahoo! Sports that he had wanted to become a free agent and could be a "disruptive force" if a team claimed him.

Now that Billups has torn his Achilles tendon and is likely out for the rest of the season, of course, the 35-year-old just wants to play basketball again.

"I will be back," Billups told Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. "I'm not done. I'm not retiring. I will definitely be back. This has been the story of my career, coming back, fighting, scrapping and I will play again."

Billups was averaging 14.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and four assists per game in his 15th season in the league.

    • Marlins offering Yoenis Cespedes a contract Wednesday?

US PresswireCuban defector Yoenis Cespedes will visit with the suddenly potent Miami Marlins Wednesday and the team expects to make him a contract offer by day's end, ESPN reports.

However, the pursuit of the 26-year-old isn't quite the same kind of thing the organization went through earlier this offseason when it went hard after — and got — shortstop Jose Reyes, closer Heath Bell and starting pitcher Mark Buehrle.

"We want him, but we don't need him," team president David Samson said, according to the site. "The difference is this: When you want a player, you aggressively go out and try to sign him. When you need him, that's when negotiations get very one-sided."

Teams can negotiate with Cespedes and his agent, Adam Katz, but a deal cannot be officially signed just yet because he still needs to attain a working visa from his new home country, the Dominican Republic.
