    • NBA rules could bench Kobe Bryant Wednesday

US PresswireThe Los Angeles Lakers will play their first game back from the All-Star break Wednesday, but the team may take the floor without 14-time All-Star Kobe Bryant.

"A new NBA policy could prevent Bryant from playing Wednesday after a neurologist diagnosed him Tuesday with a concussion from a hard foul by Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade in Sunday's All-Star game," the Los Angeles Times wrote.

The paper points out that the league's new policy says that "a player must be symptom-free for 24 hours and then complete a series of steps to confirm he was healthy enough for competition." It isn't clear if Bryant has gone through these steps, but he will visit with a neurologist Wednesday.

    • Raptors decline offers for Jose Calderon and Leandro Barbosa

uspresswireThe NBA trade deadline is March 15 and the 10-24 Toronto Raptors, who have the fourth-worst record in the league, have already had a "multitude of offers" for point guard Jose Calderon and guard Leandro Barbosa.

However, the team has said no to everything so far, according to the Toronto Sun. The paper also notes that "Raptors president/general manager Bryan Colangelo has said in the past that he is interested in extended Barbosa, who will be unrestricted this season."

If Barbosa does get dealt, though, sources tell the paper that it could be in an "extend-and-trade scenario."

Meanwhile, the Sun reports that even though the Raptors would love to have swingman Wilson Chandler on the roster, it isn't likely that the team will make an offer to the restricted free agent before the Thursday deadline because Toronto doesn't "have the cap space to submit an offer Denver would not match."

Sources tell the paper that "Toronto has balked at Chandler's asking price, but has not completely closed

    • Plaxico Burress wants to play for Eagles

US PresswireThe New York Jets would like to have wide receiver Plaxico Burress back on their roster next season, according to the New York Post, but he says he would like to pull on the uniform of the Philadelphia Eagles next year.

Burress gained himself some lifelong fans in the Big Apple when he scored the Super Bowl-winning touchdown for the New York Giants back in 2008 with the clock running down, but also then got himself a lot more attention when he shot himself in the leg in a nightclub and got sent off to the slammer. He told a Philadelphia radio station Tuesday that he'd love to join the Birds next season, the Post reports.

"Nothing else would make me happier," Burress told the station, according to the paper. "Obviously, coming to Philadelphia and instituting myself to the offense it just adds a unique dynamic to what's already in place."

The 34-year-old Burress, who was selected eighth overall in the 2000 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Michigan State, caught the ball 45 times

    • Jazz open to trading Devin Harris

US PresswirePoint guard Devin Harris has appeared in 49 games for the Utah Jazz since being traded there from the New Jersey Nets at the deadline last year as part of the Deron Williams deal.

The Jazz have already seen enough of Harris. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the team is "open to moving" the 29-year-old Harris and reserve small forward C.J. Miles "could be made available in the right situation."

No deal is imminent, the paper notes, and "Utah also doesn't feel pressure to move starting big men Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap to make room for young power forward Derrick Favors and center Enes Kanter in the near future."

Harris, an All-Star back in 2009, is averaging 9.3 points, 4.6 assists and 1.3 rebounds per game for the 15-18 Jazz, who are only 2.5 games out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

    • Patriots ask Chad Ochocinco to restructure deal

US PresswireNew England Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco had career lows of 15 receptions, 276 yards and one touchdown last season, and the team is on the hook for a $3 million base salary in 2012 and 2013.

The Patriots would like to find a way to change that financial burden, though. Sports Business Journal reports that the team has gone to the six-time Pro Bowler to ask if he will restructure his contract at all. Details of the proposal remain unclear, NESN notes.

Ochocinco joined the Pats after spending a decade with the Cincinnati Bengals. For his career, he's had 766 receptions for 11,059 yards and 68 touchdowns.

    • Ian Kennedy open to multiyear extension with Arizona

US PresswireIan Kennedy has now been with the Arizona Diamondbacks for two seasons since being traded there from the New York Yankees in a three-team deal that found Curtis Granderson moving to the Bronx from the Detroit Tigers. Since then, Kennedy has gone 30-14 with a 3.31 ERA. He went 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA last year and found himself finishing fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting.

Now the 27-year-old who will be eligible for arbitration at season's end is saying that he is open to signing a multiyear extension with the team, MLB.com reports. "Obviously I would entertain hearing it," he said, according to the site. "I think anybody would."

Kennedy also noted that he isn't aware of his agent, Scott Boras, having any extension talks with the team as of yet.

    • Cowboys looking for veteran cornerback

US PresswireThe Dallas Cowboys are going to be looking for a "a veteran cornerback in free agency" to possibly replace 33-year-old Terence Newman, whose tackles dropped from 79 in 2010 to 53 last year, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Sources tell the paper that the main targets for the team once free agency opens on March 13 will be 28-year-old Cortland Finnegan of the Tennessee Titans and 25-year-old Brandon Carr of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The paper notes that Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones "acknowledged" that Newman isn't necessarily done with the team, but that veteran cornerbacks will definitely be on the radar.

    • Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne signing as package?

US PresswireIndianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning isn't a free agent just yet, but it is still looking like he soon will be. SI.com reports that if the four-time NFL MVP ends up on the free-agent market, he could be offering himself up in a package deal with Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne, who becomes a free agent on March 13.

"At least two potential suitor teams would seriously consider" such a thing, Sports Illustrated reports. One source tells SI that Manning "would love to see it happen."

SI also hears that Wayne, who spent a decade catching Manning's passes before the QB sat out last season with a neck injury, is "very interested in the combo platter also."

Another thing SI has heard is that Colts receiver Pierre Garcon, who will also soon be a free agent, "turned down a five-year contract offer from Indianapolis last week," a sign that he "doesn't want to do anything until he knows what Manning is going to do."

    • Mariners’ Franklin Gutierrez injures throwing arm

US PresswireSeattle Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez had a rough season last year, appearing in only 92 games due mostly to stomach issues. And things haven't started well at spring training for the 29-year-old.

MLB.com reports that Gutierrez injured his right pectoral muscle on Tuesday and was kept out of the team's intrasquad game.

"We don't really know anything yet," manager Eric Wedge told MLB.com Tuesday. "We're waiting on the MRI results and will figure out the game plan after we get that. He felt something in the pec region when we were taking infield today, so we'll wait and see what the results show and go from there."

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that "a bulked-up Gutierrez showed up to spring training healthy and ready to go, after a year and a half of health troubles."

Gutierrez, who won a Gold Glove in 2010, had his best year offensively in 2009 when he hit .283 with 18 home runs and 70 RBIs. Last season, he hit .224 with one homer and 13 doubles.

    • Cubs looking to sign Matt Garza long-term?

US PresswireThe Chicago Cubs were said to be listening to trade offers for starting pitcher Matt Garza this offseason, but the team apparently didn't like any of them because the word is now that the team wants to sign the 28-year-old to a long-term deal even though he can't become a free agent till after the 2013 season, according to CSN Chicago.

"We have a good relationship with Matt," GM Jed Hoyer said, according to the site. "We need more Matt Garzas. We'll sit down to talk to him about a deal. We're hoping to get something worked out, but you never know and we'll keep it private when we do."

Garza joined the Cubs last offseason when the team traded five prospects to the Tampa Bay Rays for the man who had pitched a no-hitter in 2010. For Chicago, he went 10-10 with a 3.32 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 198 innings.

"It's a huge compliment to be wanted by other teams, but at the same time, you want to be in Chicago to turn things around," Garza told CSN. "I fell in love with the city, the ballpark,
