    • US PresswireMomentum for a deal between the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees that would send A.J. Burnett to western Pennsylvania "stayed strong" Monday night, according to the New York Post.

"The teams remained apart both on dollars and the type of prospects that would be included," the paper reports.

The Post notes that the Yanks are also talking to two other teams about Burnett as well, "but clearly (see) the Pirates as the best match for the righty."

The Pirates are up for paying $10 million of the $33 million owed to Burnett over the next two seasons, the paper notes, and will send the Yanks two prospects. The players being offered aren't very exciting to the Yankees at this point, the paper notes but the team would be more open to such players if the Pirates were willing to shell out more than $13 million of Burnett's salary.

With six other starters on the roster, the Yanks would like to unload Burnett before the season gets underway.

    • US PresswireNew York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs is 29 years old and would like to return to the Super Bowl champs next season, but if the team decides not to keep him onboard, he says he's open to joining the New York Jets, according to the New York Times.

The paper notes that Jacobs restructured his contract last offseason in order for the team to be able to keep fellow running back Ahmad Bradshaw around. Bradshaw ended up with 171 carries for 659 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. Plus, he got to score the Super Bowl winner. Jacobs finished out the season with 152 carries for 571 yards and seven touchdowns.

"It wasn't drawn out on a paper and scripted not to give me carries," Jacobs said, according to the Times. "It's just the way things went. No one is against me. No one wanted that to happen. We were getting beat most of the time. We had to go to the air. Ahmad didn't get that many carries either."

    • Rangers trading Koji Uehara to Athletics?

US PresswireThe Oakland Athletics are likely busy celebrating their signing of Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, but the team may also be adding another player soon to the roster.

ESPN reports that the A's are in conversations with the Texas Rangers about trading for reliever Koji Uehara. Oakland is also talking to free agent reliever Mike Gonzalez, the site notes.

Uehara went 2-3 with a 2.38 ERA and 85 strikeouts over 65 innings pitched for the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers. However, he had a rough postseason, letting in five runs in 1.1 innings pitched, earning him a 33.75 ERA and forcing the Rangers to not place him on the World Series roster.

    • Vladimir Guerrero wants to DH for Yankees

US PresswireThe New York Yankees are still looking to unload starting pitcher A.J. Burnett, which would create some financial breathing room to sign a DH along with Eric Chavez.

The word has been that the candidates for the DH spot have been free agents Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, and Raul Ibanez. Well, throw another name into the hat. It isn't clear how much interest the Yanks have, but 37-year-old Vladimir Guerrero, who spent last season batting .290 and hitting 13 homers for the Baltimore Orioles, "has made it known to the Yankees that he wants their DH spot," according to ESPN. The way the site sees it, though, is that Ibanez is "still the frontrunner" for the position, though.

Ibanez batted .245 with 20 homers while playing left field for the Philadelphia Phillies last season.

    • Roy Oswalt waiting for Rangers?

US PresswireThe Cincinnati Reds have been rumored to be interested in adding free agent starting pitcher Roy Oswalt before spring training gets underway, but GM Walt Jocketty is saying that the team isn't planning to add any more payroll right now, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Jocketty told the paper that the team hasn't had any contact with Oswalt's reps for the last week. "I think he's waiting for Texas to clear money," Jocketty said, the paper reports.

Of course, Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels said Sunday that his team isn't likely to add any more players to the 58 it is taking to spring training either, according to Fox Sports.

Daniels specifically addressed whether the team was going to go after Oswalt or Mike Gonzalez. "You never want to shut the door," Daniels said, according to the site. "There's a level of interest in both guys, but as far as a fit and payroll-wise, it's not as easy to see it."

    • Steelers’ Rashard Mendenhall missing 2012?

US PresswireOn the first play of the final game of last season, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall went down with a torn ACL. The word from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review is that Mendenhall could end up missing the entire 2012 season as a result. Not the way most players like to spend the final year of a contract.

"I never feel good about an ACL until (after) a year," Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said, according to the Tribune Review. "I'm not a doctor, but that's just my mindset. If he gets back before that, it's a bonus."

That would be a big loss for the Steelers since Mendenhall has been the team leader in rushing for the past three years.

Mendenhall, a first-round draft pick back in 2008 out of Illinois, rushed for 928 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

    • US PresswireThe Memphis Grizzlies have been without 6-9 Zach Randolph since Jan. 3 due to a torn right medial collateral ligament.. He and teammate Tony Allen could be found Monday night hosting a party for women and children from a local homeless shelter in honor of Valentine's Day.

"I come from a single-parent home. My mother was on welfare. It's really important for me to give back," said Randolph, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "These people probably don't have one special person in their lives to help them out."

Of course, the Grizz would like to also see Randolph back on the court. It looks like that is about to happen. The Commercial Appeal reported Monday that Randolph has been cleared to begin non-contact basketball drills on the court. That puts him on pace to return in early March.

There is no target date set, but the paper theorizes that Randolph could be back for the March 7 game against the Golden State Warriors.

    • US PresswireThe New York Knicks expect Amar'e Stoudemire to be back in the lineup Tuesday night when the team takes on the Toronto Raptors after a week off to mourn his brother's sudden death. Fellow forward Carmelo Anthony, though, will miss a few more games and return "toward (the) end of the week," according to ESPN New York.

Anthony, who has been out with a strained right groin, does not expect to have any effect on the play of second-year point guard Jeremy Lin, who has shockingly led the team to five straight wins.

"When I get back, Jeremy will have the ball in his hands and I'm playing off of that," Anthony said Monday, according to the site. "I know there's questions about, 'Can I fit in?' and stuff like that, but this is like a dream come true to me. It takes some pressure off of me. I don't have to play point guard. I don't have to try to get Amar'e 20 points, try to get this guy 20 points, me try to go out there and get 25-30 points a night, play defense, rebound do the whole thing."

    • Peyton Manning interested in joining Texans?

US PresswireFour-time NBA MVP Peyton Manning is still a member of the Indianapolis Colts, but that's not stopping from plenty of other teams from salivating from the possibility that the folks in Indy are going to let him loose soon.

Houston Texans fans suddenly have the idea that Manning could be coming their way due to a report from KTRK Houston. "Someone … who is close friends with the Manning family says Peyton is definitely interested in possibly coming to the Texans," the station reports. "The person who knows the Mannings says Peyton wants to play on a team that has a chance of going to a Super Bowl, and the Texans fit that description."

The fact that the Texans play in the same division as the Colts is said to be a plus, KTRK reports, since it Manning already knows all of the teams involved well.

The Texans won the division last season while the Colts went 2-14 without Manning, good enough to be worst in the league and qualify the Colts for the top overall draft pick this year, which will

    • Hornets’ Eric Gordon out six more weeks

US PresswireNew Orleans Hornets shooting guard Eric Gordon has only been in two games this season because of a bone bruise and now won't be back for another six weeks due to arthroscopic surgery on his right knee that he's undergoing Tuesday, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Gordon said his knee was sore when he started playing in the team's season opener and then he knocked knees with Grant Hill of the Phoenix Suns to make it worse, the paper notes. "After consulting with out medical staff, we concluded that surgery was the best route and in the best interest of Eric for the long term," General Manager Dell Demps said in a release Monday, the paper reports. "We had hoped with rest and rehab, Eric's knee would have healed. Eric is eager to return to the court and we are confident Hornet fans will get to see him soon." You can bet the Hornets, the Western Conference's worst team with a 5-23 record, would like to see Gordon as soon as he is able.
