Video: Penguins lose Jordan Staal on Mike Rupp’s knee-on-knee hit

With 4:45 left their game against the New York Rangers on Friday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins witnessed just about the last thing they wanted to see right now: Center Jordan Staal in considerable pain after a knee-on-knee collision with former teammate Michael Rupp, having to eventually be helped from the ice.

The Rangers won the game, 3-1. As for Staal, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review offered this update on the incident:

Staal remained on the ice for about a minute and appeared to be in significant pain. He was helped off the ice and did not return. After the game, coach Dan Bylsma said he had no update on Staal's status.

"I'm in a position of turning; I've got my legs out for a wide base, and he's coming by," said Rupp, who was given a two-minute penalty for kneeing. "I try to get a piece of him. I don't move my knee to get contact, but I understand the call. ... I hope he's all right."

Staal's second among Penguins forwards in average ice time (20:23) and plays extensively on special teams. With 15 goals in 34 games, Staal's on pace for the best goal-scoring season of his career. He's one of the primary reasons why the team's been able to handle the absence of Sidney Crosby up front.

Does this warrant anything further from the NHL, or does Rupp's explanation suffice?

s/t Adam Gretz for the video.

I'm a Pens fan, and that looked like it was an accident. I think Rupp tried to avoid it. Not really surprised by the injury as the Pens are simply cursed and as a fan I just anticipate a major injury every game.

fully anticipating the entire penguins roster to be made up of wilkes-barre players at some point this season

Looks pretty incidental to me. He was reaching for the un-broken stick during the collision.

Tough break for Staal & the Pens.

Pens fan. Not something Rupp would do intentionally in my opinion. Pretty standup guy.

Watched the game. Rupp didn't try to knee him. They just collided and Staal's leg was under him in an odd position when he went down.

It's been a great year to be a Staal brother in the NHL.

Mama Staal can't be too happy about this... I told my daughter, who thinks Jordan is hot, that there was a fourth Staal brother, Jared, with the 'canes, - and she said, "oh that must be the one nobody talks about." lol - she was joking, of course.

Not a Pens fan, but Pittsburgh really needs to throw out/tear up/burn all traces of these Winter Classic uniforms. They lost Crosby in 'em last year, now they've lost Staal in 'em tonight. They're becoming unlucky.

Ohh shhhhttt, and I just got one!! Wearing it Tues. to Sens game - No. 29 (Fleury is my fave.) Hope it doesn't work against them.. if they lose, I guess you'll know it's my fault.

Rupp's a great guy. As a Pens fan I in no way think he did this deliberately. Get well soon Jordan

Curse of the navy blue jersey continues. They should burn their sweaters, ban them from the areana, and immediately instate the '92 black and gold for the new 3rd jersey.

looked incidental to me, not malicious

You poor Pen fans are hanging on by duck tape and thread. The karma of Kasparitis perhaps? ;)

After 24/7, everyone can see Rupp isn't a dirty player. This was a matter of both of them being in the wrong spot at the wrong time

Rupp would not intentionally attempt a knee on knee directed at a Pens player. Or anyone else for that matter. The guy is nothing but classy. And this too is coming from a lifelong Pens fan.

I highly doubt Rupp could reproduce the results of this accident if he even wanted to (which in itself is highly unlikely).

Can't see how they can suspend this. I've seen Shanahan look the other way on more blatant knee-on-knee hits (remember Ryan Whitney on Cal Clutterbuck?)

Wow, good on you, Pens fans, for taking the reasonable approach. You guys see that there's no intent to injure, you know this guy and you're defending him. Awesome. I'd love to see some more level-headed thinking around the league, and bravo to you guys for showing us how it's done.

We're so used to our guys getting hurt, at this point we know a dirty hit from an accidental one. Rupp is a good guy - we were sorry to have to lose him!

Yes, us Devils miss Rupp too.

A Pens fan here as well. Didn't see anything here for Shanahan to look at. Just some incidental contact. Tough season. We're dropping like flies. Not a Ranger's fan by any stretch but they are beasts right now.

Accidental, which according to NHL logic will mean a 20-game suspension. They only ignore situations when there was clear intent to injure.

I can't stand the rags or pens but that looked like an accident to me.
