Islanders to bring back infamous fisherman logo one last time

The 2014-15 NHL season will be the New York Islanders' final one at Nassau Coliseum. After 43 years, the team will move to Barclays Center in Brooklyn next season, the end of a decade-long process by owner Charles Wang.

As with any final season in an old barn, the Islanders will do a lot of remembering of the good times, like their four consecutive Stanley Cup in the early 1980s and honoring past legends like Mike Bossy, Denis Potvin, Billy Smith and Bobby Nystrom.

And while they'll mostly be focusing on the good times, there will be one night, according to Neil Best of Newsday, that will remember those not-so-glory days of the 1990s.

Speaking with senior marketing manager Eileen Mathews, Best found out that the infamous fisherman logo will be see on players one last time during warm-ups before a game and auctioned off.

From Newsday:

Also ahead this winter: a night on which during warm-ups players will wear a modernized version of the notorious "fisherman" logo that debuted in 1995, after which the jerseys will be auctioned off for charity.

Those jerseys already are available for purchase by fans.

Um, shouldn't the Islanders be trying to forget that logo?

"It's part of our history," Mathews said. "I saw probably five to 10 people in Brooklyn wearing that jersey. I think it's gotten a cult following."

She said younger fans seem particularly to like it, presumably because they don't remember the first time around.

At least the charity angle makes it somewhat appealing. Maybe there can be a big bonfire in the Marriott parking lot next door as one final goodbye to one of the NHL's worst logos ever?

Said one Islanders executive at the time the original jerseys were unveiled: “I just want you to know that I think it’s awful. I had nothing to do with it.” Good to see bad jersey ideas failed to accept the proper feedback on their way to becoming a reality back then too.
