The competitiveness of the Southeast Division is the surprise of the season’s first half

Going into the 2011-12 season, most assumed that Southeast Division would be a two-horse race. Every member of the Puck Daddy staff predicted the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning to finish 1-2, with the Carolina Hurricanes, Winnipeg Jets, and Florida Panthers all presumed to be on their way to the basement, like a blogger after lunch.

Now, the season is still young, and things could indeed shake out that way. After all, the Minnesota Wild were on the top of the conference a month ago. Now they're one point up on 9th place, five points out of 12th, and falling fast. Things can change in a hurry.

Still, through the first half of the 2011-12 schedule, I'm of the mind that the Southeast Division has been the biggest surprise. For years, it's been the laughingstock of the league, known for housing the Capitals and little else of merit. Here are the standings as of this writing:

    Southeast Division - NHL.com

Really, the only thing that's unfolded as predicted is Tampa Bay occupying the space just below Washington. The fact that Florida and Winnipeg are ahead of both of them, however? That's nuts.

We've discussed, in the past, the way that weak divisions tend to lead to one team jumping ahead of the pack in the conference. The games aren't taxing and the points flow freely. But when you're meeting your match in every divisional game, it can slow you down.

I think the sudden resurgence of the Southeast is something to keep in mind when discussing the subpar first half for both the Bolts and Caps. To be certain, there are other problems with both clubs, but the competitive of the Jets' and Panthers -- the fact that they're no longer a source of easy points -- has to take its toll.

It is pretty astonishing that the top two teams in the division have losing records (Overtime losses are still losses. Add the two columns geniuses.). I have never seen such a clear depiction of what is wrong with the loser point before.

Washington however still has a winning record

Shoot-out loss really shouldn't count in the w/l column when determining strength of a team

What do you think of giving an OT loss only if lost in shoot-out (which I hate) and if a team actually wins in the 5 min OT they get the win and the other team gets the loss (with no point)

Never fear the former Thrashers will blow it.. They lull you into thinking they don't suck and then they will have a losing streak. Then, after they are eliminated they will get on a hot streak... As we enjoy yet another 60 degree day in January, I hope they are enjoying Winnipeg..

Winnipeg may be cold but a packed arena full of fans will keep them warm. :)

Do you realize you have the Thrashers? Or do you think they dropped out of the sky? Look at prior years and they're in the running for the playoffs until January when they collapse. Get ready for it. When the Thrashers were new, they played to a packed arena until the reality of a losing team set in (sound familiar?). Attendance dropped off as we stayed at the bottom and then the 1 year we had a winning season, we had packed arenas again. Then the reality of the miserable owners kicked in and we started the trend of decent seasons through December. This is the same team. No Canadian Jingoism will change that.

It's actually plus 2 degrees in Winnipeg right now, so yes we are enjoying Winnipeg. Thanks.
Oh and give them a year under the new coaching staff, then we'll see what happens. This is such a young team that's really still developing.

If the Jets can sneak into the playoffs they will be a tough opponent in the playoffs. They play to the level of their opponents almost always and combine that with the loudest building in the league... would be interesting to see in the inaugural season.

"They play to the level of their opponents" At home I agree, on the road not so much.

They lost to the Wings 7-1

They definitely play better at home. No doubt about it. They've played Boston pretty tight in their two road games though. I think it's a matter of motivation for them. They're a young, emotional team. The Wings loss... it was the 2nd of B2B, 1st game was at home then they flew in the middle of the night to Detroit. They were also coming to play a team that was red-hot at the moment. They were doomed from the beginning in that one. I think if you reversed the roles of Det/Wpg and asked Det to fly into Wpg later in December I'd argue the Jets would have beat them.

Good to see the Panthers at the top of their division, would be nice to see them make the post season.

Will there be a corresponding article about the Central Division?
      • Dave W 4 months ago
No, because the article would be 'How 'bout them Blues?' and nothing more. Everyone knew Chicago, Detroit and Nashville would be competitive and the Blue Jackets would not.

Honestly, I'm not too surprised by any division this year, just individual teams. I'm thrilled that my Blues are doing so well, and I'm shocked that Columbus and Anaheim are doing so God-awfully. I expected them to be below the curve, but geeze. Also, the Panthers are a very pleasant surprise this year.

Still, the Southeast Division is only competitive within itself, and not with the rest of the league. It was nice to see two SE Division teams in the playoffs last year, but this season they're just the SE. The only team in the division in a playoff position is the Panthers as of right now (though WPG and WSH are within striking distance) and no one in the division has a positive goal differential. It's tough to keep up with the rest of the pack when you can't score more goals than they do.

The central division is an unholy creation and its strength causes me to lose hours of sleep

Does anyone remember who won or lost the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals?
    • Colin Curry  •  Fredericton, Canada  •  4 months ago
Short memory Mooney. Similar thing happened last year. Atlanta was briefly on top of the conference, Tampa was surprising, Washington was in the doldrums, Carolina was in a battle for the eighth playoff spot, and Florida was still in the playoff conversation at the halfway point. Then the inevitable adjustment occurred and only two of those teams (Washington + Tampa) held on. The southeast will be lucky to have two playoff teams again this year.

Isn't this article jumping the gun a bit? Maybe not as late into the season but last year saw the Thrashers fighting for the lead, the Lightning surprisingly leading the division, and the Capitals languishing for parts of the early season.

Wow, the Lightning are almost as bad as we are!

      +1 as in plus minus.

Know for housing the Caps and nothing else. Last I checked both the Lightning and the Hurricanes won Stanley cups since 2002, what have the Capitals won recently.

Didn't they win some award for choking the most or something?

The staff was also way off on Ottawa (at this point), but I don't think anyone expected them to play this well.
    • macflavor  •  4 months ago
All five members of the Southeast would be in 5th place in the Central. That's a surprise, I guess.

Wow what a bad division. The SE's leader in goal differential is Washington with a +1. Washington has been playing well of late though, so maybe they pull away now, the rest of the division has kept them in it.
    • Peter  •  4 months ago
you may not like the OT point system but the fact is it applies to everyone. The number of OT appearance for FL along with the wins bolsters the fact that they are no longer easy to play against. That being said are they great? No not by a long shot but they are definitively more interesting to watch then they have been in years. Kudos.

i am confused by the false thinking that this division is good all of a sudden. This division as of now has 1 single playoff team and that team (fla) is 6th in the conference in points. The teams in this division rank 6,9,10,13,14 in the conference in total points. The only team in this division to even score more goals than they have allowed is washington and they are +1! -78 goal diff as a whole for the division the 2nd worst division in that regard is the pacific division at -19!
    • lani kai  •  4 months ago
Uh, unless you mean "competitive" as in the teams within are uniformly mediocre, I'm not sure that's the right word. Florida leads the division but in terms of points they're only 12th in the league. It's still a source of easy points.
    • The GD  •  Portland, Maine  •  4 months ago
Both Florida and Winnipeg have lost more games than they've won. If the division is competitive, it's because it's been uniformly mediocre. The Southleast lives on.

The resurgance of the Southeast? They're the worst division in the NHL. Four teams with a losing record and a combined -78 goal differential. This division is even worse than expected. It doesn't have a single decent team in it. Also LOL at the stupid standings for having the team with the best record in 3rd place. Loser points for the loss...

92 wins and 112 losses is "competitive" ?
