Texas place-kicker connects on uber-rare drop kick extra point

It's the rarest of rare events, an archaic physical feat that was once a staple in America's favorite sporting game, a bit like scrimshaw was once a significant part of American folk art.

Prep Rally is alluding to the drop kick, a play which has remained on the verge of extinction despite one-off appearances in an NFL game (courtesy of Doug Flutie) and one Florida high school game (thanks to Robinson High in 2011). Now, a drop kick extra point has reared its head in Texas, where Arlington (Texas) Martin High kicker Ben Grogan connected on a drop kick attempt on Friday in a one-sided, 59-7 victory against Weatherford (Texas) High.

As one might expect, Martin coaches may have been less willing to let Grogan experiment with the kick if the Weatherford matchup had been more competitive.

Yet, because it wasn't there was little reason to dissuade the kicker from taking a punt (all puns intended) on a one-of-a-kind kick that puts him in the category of high school football's more adventurous characters, if not its most outright brazen.

Luckily for both Grogan and Martin coaches, his one-off attempt was a big success, both in terms of form and results. Whether that is a sign of more forthcoming drop kick attempts remains to be seen, but it will certainly have helped place the Martin kicker in an extraordinarily rarified — and quirky — air for the forthcoming future.
