New York prep softball pitcher strikes out state record 28 batters, not satisfied
In case you weren't aware, a lot of people live in New York, and while Carmel (N.Y.) High senior Jasmine Ennabe accomplished something nobody in The Empire State ever had before, she wasn't satisfied.
The Adelphi University-bound softball pitcher struck out 28 batters in a 5-4, 13-inning victory against Brewster, according to The Journal News, but she felt like she should have had more.
"Hitting the outside corner for me kept a lot of people off balance," Ennabe told the paper. "My movement was pretty spot on. The ump wasn't giving me as much as I would like. I think I worked around it."
You think? Ennabe and Brewster's Alycia Feeney (13 strikeouts) took a scoreless tie into the 10 inning, when state rules mandate teams place a runner on second to begin each inning. Ennabe faced 46 batters in all, surrendering seven hits but not issuing a single walk while striking out two-plus batters per inning.
Shoreham Wading River's Chelsea Hawkins set the previous record of 27 on May 10 last year. Somehow, Ennabe's 28-strikeout performance does not even approach the national record of 61 over 30 innings set by former Fairfield (Calif.) High star and eventual NCAA Softball World Series champion Alicia Hollowell.
The Journal News' returning area Player of the Year, Ennabe's previous strikeout high for seven innings was 18 this season. She also had a 20-strikeout performance in 11 innings last month. She has 185 strikeouts in only 95 innings for the Rams this season, leading them to a 9-3 start to the spring.
