Football team’s bus ignites during rush hour on way to a game, game cancelled after replacement bus can’t make it

When Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic High's junior varsity football team got on the bus to go play Eugene (Ore.) Sheldon High, the team hoped it's offense would get hot. The offense did get hot, the defense did, too, and neither played a single down of football.

In this case, the heat was of a very literal kind. As reported by Portland TV network KATU, the Central Catholic bus caught fire en route to Eugene for the junior varsity game at Sheldon. The fire forced the bus to the shoulder of Oregon's Highway 26, where the entire Central Catholic junior varsity squad was able to escape the bus safely.

The fire wasn't put out easily or quickly. The blaze began just before the start of 5 p.m. rush hour, and police and firefighters struggled to get to the burning bus because of thick traffic.

Meanwhile, the Central Catholic football players stood by, huddled together as far to the right as they could get, all still wearing their lower pads as if they were going to get back on a bus any moment and head to a football game.

They never did get to the game, with a tweet from the official Central Catholic school account announcing that the game was cancelled less than two hours after the initial fire. That happened because a replacement bus which was to carry the team the rest of the way to Eugene never made it in time, apparently stuck in rush hour traffic itself.

Meanwhile, you can see how the football team entertained itself while waiting in the video below.

The junior varsity match up will be rescheduled, though there is no early word on when they'll get to compete. In the meantime, an immediate investigation into the fire has yet to turn up a concrete reason for the blaze.

Now Central Catholic may look for consistency rather than a hot streak when it heads to its next road game.
