Julien Leparoux and his mount, Here Comes Frazier, had led all the way in the Bourbon Stakes. Coming down the homestretch, the jockey and colt appeared to be riding to victory when Leparoux was suddenly thrown from the saddle and launched over the infield rail.
Here Comes Frazier was avoiding Leparoux's whip. The resulting jolt sent the 2009 Eclipse Award winner for outstanding jockey over the aluminum rail. The Daily Racing form reports Leparoux suffered only minor injuries to his wrist and fingers and rode in two more races later in the day.
Here Comes Frazier was not as fortunate. The horse had multiple fractures in its hock and will need surgery. Trainer Ken McPeek expects the 2-year-old colt to survive but never to race again.
The $150,000 stakes race was won by Animal Spirits.
