A 22-year old matador was arrested in Mexico this weekend after he ran away from a bull during a bullfight in Mexico's most famous arena.
After a close pass by the bull, Christian Hernandez backed away from the animal, flung his cape, sprinted to the wall and leaped over. He was later arrested for breach of contract and released after paying a small fine.
Five weeks ago, Hernandez was gored by a bull during a fight and suffered an seven-inch gash in his leg. The incident doubtlessly played a role in his decision to flee the ring this weekend.
The young bullfighter had been fighting bulls since 2006, but immediately announced his retirement after the fight. He returned to the ring following his departure and, in his final act in front of the crowd, symbollicaly removed his fake ponytail.
"I felt a deep fear, and I decided no, no, and no," Hernandez said. "I decided that was it. Let somebody else who has the ability and the courage take the opportunity ... I wanted to leave with dignity and being honest with myself."
One out of two ain't bad.
