In the 400m freestyle final, America's Katie Hoff led for most of the race. In the final ten meters, British swimmer Rebecca Adlington caught up with Hoff, and touched the wall just seven hundredths of a second before Hoff could. The drama in the pool gave Adlington gold, and Hoff silver. Though, the in-water drama was nothing compared to the drama out of the pool for other finalists in the 400m free.
In a story that seemed to come from a Federico Fellini movie, Laure Manadou of France was swimming against her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend, Federica Pellegrini. Manadou, a gold medalist in Athens, split from her coach and team early in 2007 to train with the club of her boyfriend Luca Marin, an Italian swimmer. Manadou and Marin had a public break-up late in 2007, and soon after, naked pictures of Manadou were on the internet. Marin is now dating Pellegrini, the world record-holder in the 400m free. The two faced off in the finals, with Pellegrini placing fifth and Manadou coming in eighth. There is no word on if they greeted each other after the race.
