(Fourth Place Medal)

The United States sent a record 230 Olympians to Sochi — that’s 105 women and 125 men. They come from 38 states, many of which, as you might expect, are more on the cold-weather side.

But No. 1 on the list is California, which was also No. 1 in 2010 at the Vancouver Games and No. 1 at the 2012 summer games in London. As you can see, Colorado, Minnesota and Utah produced the most winter Olympians in 2014. The same states were at the top in the 2010 games too.

How does state representation differ between the winter and summer Olympics? Which states produce far more Olympians for winter sports than summer sports? Which states don’t produce Olympians?  Which states produce the most Olympians per capita? (The answer to that last one might surprise you).

Thanks to some data from Washington Post, Business Insider and the Team USA site, we’ve put together a few lists to answer those questions.
