U.S. snowboarder Jacqueline Hernandez crashes hard on course
U.S. women's snowboard cross racer Jacqueline Hernandez took a nasty spill on the qualifying course Sunday morning. The 22-year-old from Vermont was the sixth rider down the course before she went off a small jump and hit her head. She lay on the course for several moments, appearing unconscious, before she was able to sit up and be carted off the mountain by medics.

The course proved rough for not just Hernandez. Norway’s Helene Olafsen was the first rider of the day in the snowboard cross event and also had to be carted off because of a bad fall. On Saturday, Russia's Maria Komissarova broke her spine on the same course and was taken to a local hospital to undergo emergency surgery.
“It’s always really a big bummer when you see some of your friends go down and get injured,” three-time Olympian Lindsey Jacobellis told reporters. “And you never really know because you’re kind of just sitting up there. I try to really just zone out and not think about it and focus on what I got to do.”
