U.S. athletes wear face masks upon arrival in Beijing

Some members of the U.S. Cycling team arrived in Beijing this morning wearing black respiratory masks over their mouths. Either they really love Michael Jackson or the cyclists were preparing for the unhealthy smog levels in Beijing.

Look, we get it cyclists. Beijing is smoggy. But I don't think that means the air quality is bad inside an air-conditioned airport terminal with four-story high ceilings. If the cyclists want to protect themselves when they're outside, masks are a fine, if fashion unfriendly, idea. However, there was no need to wear them while walking from the airplane to a waiting ground vehicle. Sporting those masks in full view of the waiting press was a cheap, disrespectful stunt that makes the Olympic hosts look bad, even if that wasn't the intention.
