Hubertus von Hohenlohe just put himself in the conversation for Everybody's Favorite Olympian.
Chances are you've never heard of von Hohenlohe. But check this: he's competing for Mexico in the slalom event, and this marks his sixth Olympic team. He's 55 years old, and he's also a prince of German descent whose full name is Hubertus von Fürstenberg-von Hohenlohe. Forget beer commercials, this cat is the Most Interesting Man In The World.
He's upping the ante with his outfit for Sochi. Check out the mariachi gear he'll be sporting on the slopes:
That's some fine winter style right there. Von Hohenlohe has a history of wearing distinctive outfits; you can see his recycling-themed outfit from Vancouver in 2010 above.
“Until I went to Mexico recently to make a documentary, I never realized what a beautiful, amazing, rich past and culture they have and what a proud people they are,” von Hohenlohe told NBC Sports. “It actually moved me to see how much they suffered and how much they fought for what they have. The power to have your own identity is so strong and something I believe in so I want to give it a go in a very cool, elegant way. I want to celebrate who they are, but of course in my own style.”
Von Hohenlohe has competed in Winter Games as far back as Sarajevo in 1984. He also raced in Calgary, Albertville, and Lillehammer, then took 16 years to return to the Games in Vancouver. He's never placed higher than 26th in any Olympics. But when you look this sharp, who cares how you finish?
