Olympic hockey schedule set; USA, Canada play at same time in quarterfinal

Olympic Schedule

SOCHI, Russia – The IIHF has done no favors to NHL fans back in North America in its medal round tournament schedule.

Get that picture-in-picture and your remote control trigger finger ready.

The Sochi Olympic quarterfinal will feature both Canada and the U.S. playing at the same time on Wednesday night, noon on the East Coast and 9 p.m. Sochi time. Canada faces the winner of the Switzerland/Latvia game, while the Americans play either the Slovaks or the Czechs.

The reason? Organizers want to get the Russians, Americans and Canadians in prime time, and want to get the Russians and the Canadian team in the Bolshoy Ice arena, which is the larger of the two venues in the Olympic Park.

The Russians would play the Finns in the quarterfinals at 7:30 a.m. ET.

The only solution was to roll the Russians and Canadians back to back and have the U.S. play at Shayba Arena, the smaller venue where they’ve already won two games – against Slovenia and against the Slovaks, whom they could see in the second round.

So it could be a heck of a night for hockey fans, or a frustrating one for those that would rather not flip back and forth between the North American teams’ games.
