Olympic gold medalist Dana Vollmer is expecting her first child

Olympic swimmer Dana Vollmer has been mum about whether she'll return to her sport, but she seems to have offered fans an answer on Friday. The four-time gold medalist announced on Twitter that she is pregnant with her first child.

Vollmer's husband is former Stanford University swimmer Andy Grant. She set the world record in the 100m butterfly in 55.98 seconds at the London Olympics, and also won gold with the 4x200m freestyle relay teams in 2004 and 2012 and the 4x100m medley team in 2012.

With a February 2015 due date, it's doubtful that she'll be back for next season. But don't count her out completely.

Several American women have returned to competitive swimming after giving birth, not to mention athletes in just about every other sport. A U.S. coach told me in 2012 that he thinks female swimmers' bodies are even better suited for competition after giving birth. I never verified that with doctors, but if he's right, who knows what Vollmer could accomplish in Rio.
