Ole Einar Bjoerndalen now stands alone as the most decorated athlete in Winter Games history.

The 40-year-old Norwegian biathlon star won his 13th career medal at the Winter Olympics, taking gold with teammates in the mixed relay on Wednesday. It was the second gold medal of the games for Bjoerndalen, who became the oldest gold-medal winner in Winter Games history last week when he won the 10-kilometer sprint. Sochi marks his fifth Olympic appearance.

Wednesday's gold allowed Bjoerndalen to move out of a tie with countryman Bjoern Daehlie, who won 12 Olympic medals in cross-country while appearing in Albertville, Lillehammer and Nagano.

Both men have won a total of eight golds.

Bjoerndalen is tied for fourth in overall Olympic medals when you factor in Summer Games participants. United States swimmer Michael Phelps owns the overall lead with 22 Olympic medals, followed by Larisa Latynina, a Soviet Union gymnast who won 18.
