After a night of consistently strong performances, Nastia Liukin won the all-around gymnastics title. She was in second after two rotations, but sealed the deal with a solid performance on the beam, and a perfect floor exercise. Shawn Johnson won silver after a similarly strong floor routine, which put her ahead of bronze medalist Yang Lilin by .125. An American win semed in doubt early on after some questionable scores given to Liukin and Johnson on the vault and parallel bars, but the women fought back for a 1-2 American finish.
In contrast to last night's men's competition, the women had excellent performances throughout the night. Even women out of contention, like Russia's Anna Pavlova, hit her floor routine. This made Liukin's accomplishment all the more impressive. She didn't have to wait for someone to make a mistake. She clinched the gold on her own.
