Missy Franklin's Olympic ascendance hit a speed bump on Tuesday night when she narrowly finished out of the medals in the 200 freestyle.

The American teen sensation was .01 seconds out of a medal, touching in fourth place. Franklin qualified for the final on Monday night, then was back in the pool 14 minutes later to win her first gold medal in the 100 back.

Her American teammate, Allison Schmitt, won the gold in an Olympic record.

Franklin took out the race fast, touching first at the 50-meter mark and second at the midway point. She was narrowly out-touched in the final meters.

It's a disappointing result, albeit one that isn't a swimming surprise. Franklin's power is in the backstroke.

She has two more individual races and two more relays to go in London. Franklin will in the 100 free, starting Wednesday and 200 back. She is the heavy favorite in that backstroke race on Friday night. Last August in Shanghai, Franklin won that event at the world championships, heralding her arrival on the national scene.
