Oracle’s $10 million America’s Cup catamaran capsizes in San Francisco Bay

You don't see these kinds of problems in golf. Trouble hit Tuesday afternoon for the Oracle Team USA America's Cup team, as their AC72 catamaran capsized in San Francisco Bay.

All 11 crew members safely escaped the 72-foot racing yacht, but strong winds and tides have hampered recovery of the $10 million craft. Oracle Team USA officials noted that damage to the craft and its wingsail are indeed significant.

"We did something we had hoped we would never do, and that's capsize an AC72," said skipper Jimmy Spithill. "The most important part is that all the crew are safe, and no injuries.

For those of you who haven't been following the America's Cup, Oracle Team USA is the reigning champion, and will be looking to defend its title at the 34th competition starting in September 2013. The America's Cup is the oldest international competition trophy, with the first competition taking place in 1851. Next year's race will be held in San Francisco Bay, which clearly is not playing the genial host just yet.
