Africa runs the table in the marathon

Fourth-Place Medal

Samuel Wanjiru, a 21-year old from Kenya, won his country's first gold medal in the marathon, and did it in Olympic-record breaking time. He broke away from the pack and ran into the Bird's Nest without any close competitors. Though many that followed Wanjiru looked exhausted, he coasted to the finish line and danced with the Kenyan flag after winning. Jaourad Gharub of Morocco took silver, and Ethiopia's Tsegay Kebede will be bringing home bronze. Though Wanjiru trains partly in Japan, he and his teammates Martin Lel and Luke Kibet had to move some of their training to Namibia after civil strife broke out in Kenya. Winning an event as grueling as the marathon is an even more impressive feat when you consider what they had to overcome.
