As season debuts go, it wasn’t the best one for goalie Bernhard Starkbaum of Brynas in the Swedish Hockey League. He faced 30 shots from Frölunda and gave up four goals, including two in the first six minutes of the third period to blow the game open last Thursday.

Ah, but even the worst movie of all-time has at least one performance to savor.* Here’s Starkbaum’s brilliant stick save on Anton Axelsson.

Paddle save and a beauty.

After Starkbaum’s defenseman turned the puck over, hitting a teammate that was leaving for the bench, Nicklas Lasu cruised in and then dished to a wide open Axelsson. He fired at the open net … only to see it glace off of Starkbaum’s stick.

Starkbaum played in two games for Bryans this season, leaving the second one early due to “family reasons.” He appeared in two games for Austria in the Sochi Olympics, including that 6-0 drubbing by Canada.
