The Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings didn’t disappoint in the first 20 minutes of their epic Game 7 battle in the Western Conference Final, combining for five goals in the first period:

Brandon Saad opened the scoring at 5:06 on a feed from Patrick Kane, as that line remained blazing hot. Jonathan Toews had a layup power play goal with Justin Williams in the box for tripping at 8:36. It appeared Chicago was going to cruise to a series win …

... OH, THAT’S RIGHT, THIS SERIES IS INSANE.

Jeff Carter cut the lead to 2-1 after a rebound off Corey Crawford sailed in the air and was knocked behind him by Carter’s stick, perilously close to being over the cross bar. Video review confirmed the goal.

Then Mr. Game 7, Justin Williams, scored 51 seconds later to tie the game. Wiliams is now tied for the most Game 7 goals in NHL history with seven, and is tied for most Game 7 points with Doug Gilmour with 13.

But the Blackhawks left the period with a 3-2 lead thanks to a funky bouncing puck goal by Patrick Sharp that eluded Jonathan Quick.

Crawford was actually quite good in the period, making a few big saves and stopping nine of 11 shots. Quick gave up three goals on seven shots for a .571 save percentage.
