Video: Shane Doan’s buzzer beater earns him first NHL hat trick

Shane Doan with a lot of hatsPhoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan had played 1,160 NHL games, all with the same franchise, heading into tonight's tilt against the New York Islanders. He's been an All-Star twice and scored 20-plus goals in 10 of the past 11 seasons.  One individual accomplishment that's eluded Doan has been the hat trick. In 1,160 games, Doan has had 38 2-goal games, but never been able to get that third one.

During the Coyotes' 5-1 win over the Islanders on Saturday night, Doan finally got his hat trick in dramatic fashion.

As time was winding down in the third period, Doan's shot beat Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov as the final buzzer went off. A review of the shot showed that Doan waited until the last possible second, literally, to record his memorable first hat trick:

Please recall the Coyotes were burned by a buzzer beater from the New York Rangers and Brad Richards last month. This time, however, the game was well in hand and the Coyotes were trying desperately to help their captain out in the final period.

As Doan pointed out to NHL.com last month, he did net a hat trick for Team Canada against Belarus during the 2007 World Championships. But doing it for the Coyotes, at the NHL level, in the final second of a win, has to be much sweeter for him.

Despite die-hard Blackhawks fandom, Shane Doan has been my favorite player in the league for years, and I couldn't be happier for him right now. One of the best guys in the league, glad he got it.

The atmosphere was definitely unreal! Congrats to Doan, a class act who deserved it and earned it considering that it's his first career hat trick!

I'd say Danny Briere's game winning almost buzzer beater was better, just because it was actually needed.

"But we hate the Flyers! Who cares that he took a slapshot he shouldn't even bothered taking it's obviously a better goal because Shane Doan is nice! thumbs down!" Sheesh people.

Probably because it has nothing to do with the outcome of the game. Sure Briere had a more important goal for his hat trick, but nobody cares about that. This is about Shane Doan, a guy who has played over 1,100 games, with over 300 career goals and not having a hat trick ever. I'm a Flyers fan, and I'll tell you Shane Doan#$%$ trick was much more special. Not because of the impact on the game but because it was Doan's first NHL hat trick in 1,100 games.

See, if it was even a good hat trick I'd appreciate it. But just like I don't appreciate football teams who run up the score for stats, I don't think his last shot should have even been taken. So what's so great about this hat trick - the fact that he should have had more before? Nothing against him personally, but I just don't think it's so great.

Lessee..Shane Doan was one of the dirty chumps who fell back on cheap play when the Wings were destroying the Coyotes in the first round of last year's playoffs. What happened when the Wings got down 3-0 to San Jose? Did they resort to the Shane Doan-style of dirty play and give in? Nope. They scrapped back. Fell short, but made their home fans proud, unlike this loser. This is his first and last moment of glory for him and there's a reason he's on a team where only 5,00 people see him play at home on a good night.

And Yahoo is off - I live in Detroit. Five blocks from the Joe Louis Arena. I don't live in Southfield. Give me a break.

I call #$%$ on the amount of hats in that picture. How many are there, like 100? There's no way there were that many Phoenix fans at the game.
