Video: From E3, footage of NHL 2K9 for the Nintendo Wii

If you're like us and you're desperately clinging to cultural relevancy by watching G4 on digital cable, then you no doubt realize that the E3 Media and Business Summit is wrapping up in Los Angeles. (Or maybe you're watching G4 for this. If so, we understand completely.)

This invitational-only trade show has become the place where gaming companies tease and tantalize about their upcoming products; and, in turn, where geeks can viciously criticize or shamelessly gush over a few seconds of non-contextual footage projected in a darkened conference room. So it's just like ComicCon, but without as many Imperial Stormtrooper battalions and women dressed as Harley Quinn.

2K Sports presented pre-release footage from NHL 2K9 at the event, and went into detail about what Nintendo wanted out of the first hockey title for the Wii: "You're taking slap shots with the wrist, but when you're fighting, you're moving both the nunchuk and the Wii remote around."

Yeah, we've come a long way from picking Poland and skinny-medium-fat-fat on "Ice Hockey," haven't we?

Coolness: The game will feature a mode where you drive the Zamboni between periods. More coolness: This footage captured at E3 that doesn't feature any Wii-mote action, but gives a solid glimpse at the play and the philosophy behind NHL 2K9:
