Tuesday’s Three Stars: Avs’ Jones pots two; Shutouts for all, even a guy who lost

Li'l Jon takes in a Habs game

Lil' Jon cheats on the Thrashers/Jets franchise with the Montreal Canadiens. Not sure what he sees in Montreal, especially since it's clearly tough to find a diamond-encrusted goblet there.

No. 1 Star: Tomas Vokoun, Washington Capitals

Facing his former team in a showdown for first place in the Southeast, Vokoun mustered a fabulous performance, making 42 saves to shut out the Panthers, 4-0. Alex Ovechkin scored twice and Jason Chimera added a goal and an assist in the win.

No. 2 Star: Evgeni Nabokov, New York Islanders

Nabokov sees your 42-save shutout performance and raises. The Islanders' netminder made 45 saves, every one of them absolutely crucial, as the Isles eked out a 1-0 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Sure, Ilya Bryzgalov technically registered a shutout too, but he only needed to make 18 saves and he surrendered shootout goals to John Tavares and newly-inked Frans Nielsen, so he is the goat.

No. 3 Star: David Jones, Colorado Avalanche

Jones scored the second and fourth goals in Colorado's 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. He also added an assist on Kyle Quincey's empty-netter as the Avalanche ended a five-game losing skid. Paul Stastny contributed two assists and Gabriel Landeskog scored the game-winner 38 seconds into the third.

Honorable Mention: It took an eight-round shootout, but Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens held off the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 3-2 win. It was in a losing effort, but Evgeni Malkin's shootout spin-o-rama was money:

Steven Stamkos scored his league-leading 35th goal, but it was for naught as the Tampa Bay Lightning fell to the Los Angeles Kings, 3-1... Bryan Little scored the game-winner in the Winnipeg Jets' 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Phil Kessel notched his 30th in the loss... Radim Vrbata had a goal and an assist and Mike Smith made 28 saves as the Phoenix Coyotes knocked off the Dallas Stars, 4-1... Led by the unstoppable and godlike Byron Bitz's one-goal, one-assist performance, the Vancouver Canucks edged the Nashville Predators 4-3 in a shootout. Roberto Luongo was questionable at times, and downright incredible at others, such as on this save of the night candidate:

... David Perron scored twice and Brian Elliott made 28 of 29 saves in his first regular-season game back in Ottawa as the St. Louis Blues topped the Senators, 3-1. The win was the Blues' first in Canada's capital since January 26, 2000... Martin Brodeur registered the fourth shutout of the evening and the 117th shutout of his career in the New Jersey Devils' 1-0 win over the New York Rangers. David Clarkson scored the lone goal... Denis Savard scored the first goal of his career and added an assist in the Columbus Blue Jackets' 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Jackets coach Todd Richards, formerly of the Wild, probably enjoyed that a little...

Did you know? Dan Hamhuis played his 600th game Tuesday, while defensive partner Kevin Bieksa played his 400th. Milan Michalek, meanwhile, played his 500th.

Dishonorable Mention: At 7-1-2, the Canucks are the league's hottest team over their last 10 games, but ask any Canuck fan -- they've been playing like pure crap... Meanwhile, the Blackhawks are struggling for real. While Colorado ended a five-game losing skid, Chicago extended its to six with the loss... and finally, I think the no-goal call in New York was stupid.

"At 7-1-2, the Canucks are the league's hottest team over their last 10" Actually, at 7-1-2 and riding a 5 game win streak, to the Canuck's 2, the New Jersey Devils have to be the hottest team in the league right now. With the Canuck's facing low quality opponents in COL, MIN and PHX (they did also play TOR and NSH) whereas the Devils faced the Conference leader twice, PHI and PIT, (and a softy against MTL). They've won in many ways, scoring 19 goals over 4 games, followed by a 1-0 shutout against the top team in the East. No love for the East, especially the Atlantic, even with their 4 out of 5 teams currently in the playoffs.

Which is why the Devils didn't get a dishonourable mention, I guess...

While I won't argue the 5 game win streak point, but the Canucks are 5-0-1 in the last 6, and they did not play Toronto, Minnesota OR Phoenix. They DID play Nashville, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Jose all contending playoff teams, with their only softies being Edmonton and Colorado, their only reg loss coming against an Anaheim team that had been hot at the time.

I'm not bashing New Jersey, their doing awesome lately, but try to get your facts straight if your going to try to diminish another team's accomplishments.

But the point is this, the Canucks have played like absolute garbage since the Boston game, and have coasted through this portion of the season with little effort or focus, yet other than a 4-2 loss to Anaheim, have only lost in the Shootout, and continue to rack up points. What's the logical conclusion about what's going to happen when this team starts putting a focused effort in?

Mooney did you even watch the Isles game? Voukon made a lot of saves and he was great but I was at that game and most of the FLA shots were from the outside. 42 saves yes, but they were pretty standard saves. I watched the Isles/Nabby highlights...holy cow!

How is it that Vokoun's less SOG/less time vs weaker opponent shutout ranks him higher than Nabokov's more SOG/more time vs better opponent? Is it because of the ground the Caps gain by the win or what?
      • Adam 3 months ago
I was thinking the same thing. Plus Vokoun had a lead for most of the game. Nabokov was playing knowing that one goal would defeat his team. A superb performance.

short answer: no one cares about the new york islanders.

        sorry.

the answer: this blog is located in DC and very Capital centric. Look to last nights "Capital recap" post for proof. These clowns make Jack Edwards look like Foster Hewitt.

Mooney doesn't see what Lil Jon sees in the Habs? Really?

The guy is wearing a PK Subban jersey, and Mooney got this very gig on Puck Daddy by writing about how cool it was for the Thrashers to try appealing to its black constituents, but now Mooney cannot fathom why Lil Jon would root for Subban?

What's next? Wondering why old white men support the Republican party?

Hey, at least it wasn't a "Montreal players are also little" joke.

Nabby should be the number 1 star for sure. It's good to see he can still pull off the occasional stoning every now and then. Great job Nabby!

Lil Jon was a Thrashers fan, why is he wearing a Canadiens jersey??
      • TMC 3 months ago
My guess? Someone told him the Thrashers moved to Canada- so he asked someone to get him a Canadian jersey and they instead got him a Canadiens jersey.

The truth is, everyone is a closet Habs fan.

I had Vokoun, Nabokov, and Brodeur all in (we start 3 goalies) in my pool. Risky with Nabby playing the Flyers... but, huge reward tonight!

That guy stood on his head- which DiPietro can't do 'cause he'd break it....

Glad to hear about Bitz's night. Always liked him in Black & Gold.

That Denis Savard kid is pretty good, but I'd like to see him pull off a spin-o-rama. He ain't no David Savard, that's for sure.

This blog just gets worse and worse. I used to come here for quality hockey insight and interesting news from Wysh, but I hope Mooney and Lambert don't get paid much as they're both awful. At least the video clips work again. Can you guys tone down the snark and knock it off with your team biases?

Way to keep it classy Mooney. Paul Stastny also played in his 400th game last evening. Canucks bias much here? Sheesh

And once again, people debate the legality of the explicitly legal spinorama. Do the TSN announcers really think there are different rules for a penalty shot vs. shootout?
