Tuesday’s Three Stars: 4-spots for Kovalchuk, Spezza; who throws a strawberry on the ice?

AP - Miikka Kiprusoff keeps his eye on the puck vs. Toronto

No. 1 Star: Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers

The Rangers' star goalie made 42 saves in posting his NHL-best seventh shutout of the season, leading New York to a 3-0 victory over the Boston Bruins. Ryan Callahan scored for the sixth time in four games, while Ryan McDonagh and Artem Anisimov had the other tallies. As you can see from this save, he was fairly locked in.

No. 2 Star: Jason Spezza, Ottawa Senators

The Senators star had the primary helper on Erik Karlsson's first-period goal and then did the heavy lifting himself: Scoring on the power play, at 5-on-5 and into an empty net for his first hat trick since March 20, 2010. Ottawa and Craig Anderson (28 saves) shut out the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-0.

No. 3 Star: Ilya Kovalchuk, New Jersey Devils

The Devils winger scored a hat trick — a power-play goal in the first, and then two goals in the third including an empty-netter gift from Zach Parise — and assisted on Petr Sykora's power play tally. He had seven shots on goal and played 25:04. The Devils defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 4-1, behind 29 saves by Marty Brodeur.

Honorable mention: The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Dallas Stars at home, 3-1, to set a new NHL record for consecutive wins on home ice with 21. Joey MacDonald made 20 saves. Henrik Zetterberg and Brad Stuart scored in a 20-shot barrage in the first period. … Another loss for the Chicago Blackhawks. Ryan Ellis's deflected but save-able shot beat Ram Emery at 14:18 of the third period, giving the Nashville Predators a 3-2 win over Chicago. Eliis had a 2-point night; Pekka Rinne made 30 saves. Chicago has now lost nine is a row. … The Anaheim Ducks keep winning. Niklas Hagman and Corey Perry scored in the third period to give Anaheim a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild. The Ducks have earned points in 16 of their last 18 games. … Miikka Kiprusoff made 41 saves while Alex Tanguay had a goal and two assists in the Calgary Flames' 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jarome Iginla scored goal No. 22. … Don't look now, but with that Leafs loss the New York Islanders have crept to within six points of a playoff spot with their 3-1 win at the Winnipeg Jets. P.A. Parenteau had a goal and assist in the third period. Evgeni Nabokov made 37 saves. … The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the St. Louis Blues, 2-1, in a game that reminded us why we don't bet on hockey. Steve Mason (31 saves) outdueled Jaroslav Halak, while Derek Dorsett scored the game winner at 6:49 in the third. But the game was really decided with 1.8 seconds left, as David Perron was whistled for having "gloved the puck into the net" for the Blues, one of two video reviews that went Columbus's way.

Fight of the Night: Good tussle and a draw between Matt Kassian of the Wild and George Parros of the Ducks:

Did you know? Tuesday's game was the 13th time brothers Mikko and Saku Koivu played against each other. (AP)

Dishonorable mention: P.A. Parenteau had a rare diving minor called against him vs. Winnipeg, and later took a cross-checking penalty. … Finally, please don't waste a perfectly good chocolate covered strawberry by flinging it on the ice. You're making Darren Pang over-excited.

Clearly the strawberry was thrown by an angry wife/girlfriend. "Awww chocolate covered strawberries, and wait, what? Tickets to the game! On valentines day?! You suck, you promised me dinner at a fancy restaurant. Yes i know it will cost about the same but thats not the point. God, I shoulda listened to my mom and stayed with Gary."

No honorable mention of Wisniewski - did Shanahan write this?

I'll score the fight a draw, with Kassian getting a point for the fight and Parros getting a point for the stache.

Lets recap Parenteau's "embellishment" call from last night: 1) Get hit from behind into the boards, go head first. 2) Recover from hit without making any gestures at the official 3) Get called for embellishment 4) wonder why the hit from behind was called for interference not boarding. 5) wonder why you got a penalty at all and now have what should've been a powerplay at a crucial point in the game erased

Oh no, but we are all crazy. I wonder how many people who tell us we are wrong about this ever watch the islanders? After we took the lead last night I predicted a penalty within the next 2 minutes. Wala, there it was. After we tied the game in the second we never got another PP and they got 4. What a crock, Bettman is a joke.

Parenteau's "dive" was total #$%$ as well as three or four other non-calls. Another terriblly ref'd game for the Isles. It's a miracle they've made it into playoff bubble.
      • Penalty Box Resident 3 months ago
The NHL will do everything it can to keep the Islanders out of the playoffs. It's horrible.

St. Louis slew foot on Karlsson deserves some attention, as does Karlsson getting tangled up with him and sending them both crashing into boards a little before. A bit of undersized old-timer vs undersized up and comer that left them both #$%$ and me amused.

Well, outside these two minors, Parenteau racked up another 2-point night, and now has 51 points on the year. And to say I picked Grabner over him and Fleischmann on my fantasy team...

How come as soon as the Isles tied the game the offciating got worse and biased? How come as soon as the Isles took the lead, the offciating got even worse? How come the Isles can't touch the other team, but they can check our players head first into the goal or into the boards? How come it actually happens to them so often , that their fans can actually prdeict when the next #$%$ call is coming as soon as our team takes the lead or does something good? How comes our players health is not as important as Totonto, Ottawa or Winnipeg staying ahead of the Isles? You should be ashamed of yourself NHL

How come your an isle's fan? Might have better luck with the Red Wings

The answer to your question is obvious: God hates the Iles. What else could it possibly be?!?

Hahaha the hilarious part is where he creates a conspiracy theory in favour of CANADIAN teams. I thought it was supposed to work the opposite way?
    • mikepick  •  New York, New York  •  3 months ago
Well, now I know which of CGY and TOR, both bubble teams, have a shot at the playoffs, and it ain't the Leafs. Damnit, guys, pull it together.

Considering he gets intimidated so easily, and he plays for a team not worthy of having an all-star, Kovalchuk is rolling at over a point-per-game pace. Just happy he was able to play since we know just how frightened he probably was.

RED WINGS should have been 1st star!
    • Denali  •  New York, New York  •  3 months ago
How is the third star mentioned in the headline but the # one is not? Epic fail, oh wait it was written by a Devils fan, that explains it!
      • Hand of Godard 3 months ago
I used to think it was extremely stupid for people to #$%$ about who made the three stars on this blog. You've proved to me that people will always find something even more pointless to #$%$ about. Good work.
      • Denali 3 months ago
If you read my comment, obviously you didn't, I commented on the headline and that Puckboy is a Devils fan. So maybe you should you should do something with that hand other than what you currently do with it.

This is so biased (again) against the New York Rangers. First, the headline mentions kovalchuk first even though he was your 3rd star of the night. Also, Lundqvist is not mentioned at all in the headline in favor of...someone throwing food on the ice and your hero kovalchuk? Second, the picture is of Kiprusoff who did WHAT tonight exactly? More dreck from Puck Devils.
      • Daniel 3 months ago
Yes, because writing an entire post about one of Lundqvist's saves and making him the first star of the night sure betrays an anti-Ranger bias.

        *sigh*
      • JimTheThird 3 months ago
Besides, the picture is excellent! That and you can't write the entire article into the headline...
      • Dave W 3 months ago
Wysh is actually pretty fair to the Rangers considering he's a Devils fan.

Anyway, the way Henrik is playing this year, it'd get a little redundant to have his pic on the 3 Stars post every day he plays...

"P.A. Parenteau had a rare diving minor called against him vs. Winnipeg, and later took a cross-checking penalty."

Did you watch the game or even the penalties, to so you could see how crappy both those calls were? That was a new NHL officiated specialty. Keep the lowly team down, while we help the Canadian team with a big fanbase.
