(Puck Daddy presents its annual look back at the year in hockey. Check back every day through the New Year for our many lists and hot takes.)
As 2015 comes to a close, our heads flood with images of the last year in hockey. Some of them are goofy. Some of them are heartbreaking. And least one of them involved an oversized rubber duckie.
Here are the top 10 images in hockey for 2015:
10. Capitals Win Winter Classic
Troy Brouwer’s late-game goal gave the Washington Capitals the win in the Winter Classic over the Chicago Blackhawks, followed by a beautiful celebration in the D.C. air. It was enough to earn a banner at the Caps’ practice facility. But really, what isn’t? (Photo by John McDonnell/The Washington Post via Getty Images)
9. Newborn In The Stanley Cup
Then-Blackhawks center Antoine Vermette’s wife Karen was still a few days away from delivering baby Emilia Vermette when Chicago captured the Stanley Cup. But one day after she was born, the little one was propped up inside the bowl of the Stanley Cup for an adorable photo. (Photo via Phil Pritchard)
8. Leafs Fan Protest
A reminder about the contentious relationship between the Toronto Maple Leafs fans and their team before the hirings of Mike Babcock and Lou Lamoriello. This photo from the Toronto Star captures Nazem Kadri carrying a jersey thrown in protest with his stick. Three fans were banned from the ACC due to their action. (Photo by Steve Russell)
7. Patrick Kane Press Conference
When the Blackhawks trotted Patrick Kane out in front of the media before training camp at Notre Dame – to (not really) discuss his ongoing sexual assault investigation – fans saw a stark contrast with last postseason’s golden boy. Kane looked beleaguered and emotionless. It was striking. (Antonio Perez / Chicago Tribune)
6. Stanley Cup X-Ray
Keeper of the Cup Phil Pritchard tweeted this amazing image of the Holy Grail as it passed through airline security, as TSA ensures that there’s no contraband being smuggled inside the Stanley Cup.
5. Tyler Seguin In The Body Issue
Who knew all we needed to perfectly capture the roguish charms of the Dallas Stars forward a large plastic duck. This is honestly the most oddly arousing episode of SESAME STREET we’ve ever seen…
4. Kimmo Timonen
At 40 years old and after blood clots in his lungs appeared to end his career, Timonen was traded to the Blackhawks at the deadline and then captured the Stanley Cup in his final NHL season. A truly wonderful moment for a wonderful human being.
3. So Long, Nassau
The haunting photos from Bruce Bennett as the Nassau Coliseum ice was dug up one last time were a solemn farewell to the old barn.
2. Clint Reif’s Child Gets The Cup
There wasn’t a dry eye at the Blackhawks’ parade when CJ Reif, the son of the team’s late trainer Clint Reif, was given the team’s championship belt and raised the Cup with Patrick Kane and Kris Versteeg.
1. The Most Canadian Photo Ever
Two Canadians, one a British Columbia Mountie, playing hockey on a mountain-top ice rink. It truly is the “most Canadian photo ever.” (bcRCMP)
