Thus ends the incredibly odd NHL journey for Mike Comrie, a.k.a Mr. Hilary Duff

PeopleAccording to Mark Spector of Sportsnet, former Edmonton Oilers center and current unrestricted free agent Mike Comrie has officially retired from the NHL, as you may have gathered from this recent photograph (he's the one on the left).

Last summer, Comrie put off the decision in the hopes that his recovery from hip surgery might lead back to the NHL.

In the end, it was delaying the inevitable, as Comrie, 31, had another hip surgery recently that made him reevaluate his career.

From TSN, a statement from Comrie:

"My career has afforded me a series of phenomenal opportunities to play and become friends with some of the greatest people I have ever known and some of the greatest players who have ever played this game," Comrie said in a statement.

"To have made the lasting friendships I enjoy today with so many of my former teammates is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. It's the reward that has made all the hard work, the trades, the moves and the surgeries worthwhile."

Thus ends what is, without question, of the strangest NHL careers in recent memory.

    Consider:

Heir to a Canadian fortune gets drafted in the third round by the Oilers in 1999. Scores 33 goals in his first full season. Chooses not to re-sign with the Oilers as a restricted free agent in 2003. The Oilers opt to trade him to the Anaheim Ducks for "prospect Corey Perry and a first-round draft pick," according to the LA Times, but GM Kevin Lowe wants Comrie to pay the Oilers $2.5 million as a condition for the trade.

Traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for a package that included a first-round pick, in a move that left everyone unhappy save for Comrie.

Traded again in 2004 to the Phoenix Coyotes for Sean Burke, Branko Radivojevic and Ben Eager. Plays in Sweden during the lockout. Traded by Phoenix to Ottawa in 2007 for Alexei Kaigorodov, who played six games in the NHL. Signs with the New York Islanders later that year.

Begins dating former Disney teen idol Hilary Duff -- spawning the immortal hockey WAGs nickname "Duffrie" -- who becomes a fixture at Islanders games, and is generally awesome about it:

Traded to Ottawa in 2009 with Chris Campoli. Signs back with Edmonton in 2009 to cleanse that relationship. Marries Duff in Aug. 2010. Signs with the Pittsburgh Penguins to play on a line with Sidney Crosby in Sept. 2010. Things get sexy with Duff.

Becomes an oft-injured healthy scratch, and then misses the majority of the season with a bad hip. Becomes Duff's baby daddy.

Fair thee well, Mike Comrie. Lovely wife. New addition on the way. And an NHL career that, in hindsight, was a memorable one, albeit a briefer one than many imagined.

I guess saying Comrie's NHL career is "So Yesterday" would've been a little TOO obvious...

A real "what could have been" player.

So much potential, but injures killed his career short and his stand-off with Oilers management didn't help his image.

But hey. He's married to a gorgeous woman, he still will get a NHL pension, and his family are still multi-millionaires. Not bad at all.

Stand off with the Oilers hurt his rep? A little, I'm sure. But I'd say that Comrie probably had more of a high-stakes business background than most of the 20-somethings GMs like to push around, and that being unable to bully a guy who both understood the business realities at least as well as he did AND didn't need the money probably "forced" the notably cool-headed Lowe into causing most of that problem.

How can you have a farewell post for Comrie without mentioning the paparazzi pictures of his proposal and her "acceptance."

For those curious about who the Ducks drafted with the pick that would have gone to Edmonton with Perry: Ladislav Smid. So, um, what could have been…

      "Fair thee well, Mike Comrie."

Really, Yahoo? When did "fair" become a verb?

bout the same time "malnarished" became a werd . . . and also, you don't get it !!! Yahoo is brilliant, because it's the pinnacle of dry humor !!! It's not trying to be a "real" provider of news, search engine, or anything else at all !! It's all a genius parody, like "The Onion," but even further tongue~in~cheek, to a dizzying extreme, to where most people just don't appreciate the depth of humor of what Yahoo! has actually accomplished on a highly artistic level. But just step back and think about this logically for a moment: could any sincere "news" provider be this bad, even in this day and age?? Of course not !!! They've been pulling both our legs on all of us, for how long now, and most people still don't get it?? They are way, way, ahead of the game !!! They're the "Flight of the Conchords" of internet "news" (chortle chortle gufffaw) sites . . . Yahoo! is the brightest, most refreshing anti~commentary on current events available anywhere in the world today, once you stop looking at the car wreck it appears to be on the surface, and see the masterpiece it truly is "between the lines," day after day after day after day after day after day after day . . . !!! And what's more, if we truly want our country to become great again while it still might be possible in any way at all, we need to come together in our altogether as a family to elect the mastermind whose behind is causing all this excitement at Yahoo! to lead our country back to the top of the top, CHRIS CHASE FOR OUR PRESIDENT OF OUR GREAT UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN 2012 !!! Imagine if the Oilers had gotten that "prospect Corey Perry and a first-round draft pick".

Really boggles the mind how Lowe is still employed.

Mike Milbury was worse...and employed far longer.
