Wild, Blues get chippy; suspensions coming for Peters, Clutterbuck, Backes?

It's pretty easy to understand why the Minnesota Wild were frustrated Saturday. On a macro scale, they have all of 4 wins in 2012 and they leave Missouri mired in a 7-game losing streak. On a micro scale, that 7th loss came in one of their worst performances of the season, as the Wild could only muster a season-low 13 shots, falling 4-0 to the St. Louis Blues.

And, to make matters worse, they may be looking at supplemental discipline for a couple of players.

Warren Peters will most certainly be hearing from Brendan Shanahan after his crosscheck to the head of Blues' captain David Backes, which resulted in a 5-minute major and a match penalty:

With the Wild on the powerplay and under five minutes to go in a 4-0 game, Backes showed no signs of letting up, hitting Nate Prosser in the corner just moments before appearing to ride Jared Spurgeon into the side boards. After the puck was frozen at the Wild goal, Backes was met by several Minnesota players, and knocked to the ice by Peters' shot to the head.

Said Peters after the game: "Intent was not to get him in side of head. I got to be more responsible for my stick." Shanahan will undoubtedly echo the second sentence while handing out supplemental discipline of some kind.

UPDATE: According to Mike Russo, Peters has a disciplinary hearing with the NHL Sunday afternoon.

A suspension could hurt for the Wild, as Peters is one of their top centres (a fact that also has to hurt).

But, while the Department of Player Safety is reviewing the Peters crosscheck, they'll likely take another look at that Backes' hit on Spurgeon (earlier in the clip above).

Shanahan has shown a strong dislike for plays of that nature, and with the distance Backes travels prior to the hit, he might be in line for a suspension of his own. However, as Darren Pang said on the broadcast, it looks as though Spurgeon blew a tire.

We'll wait for a better angle to pass judgment, but if Backes avoids suspension here, it will be the second time this season a player has ridden Spurgeon into the boards from behind and walked away. Cody McLeod was forgiven for a similar play along the end boards back in December.

But wait! There's more! Cal Clutterbuck may also be getting a second look after putting his shouler into the head of Blues' defenseman Alex Pietrangelo during a second period hit.

Clutterbuck has been known to charge on occasion, but he isn't usually isn't a feet-leaver. In this case, however, that's what he does, rising off the ice prior to contact.

Pietrangelo wasn't injured on the play and Clutterbuck received 2 minutes for boarding. Is that all he'll get or will Shanahan hit him with the ban-hammer? Lord knows Shanny will be in a sour mood once he realizes he spent his entire afternoon watching tape from a Blues-Wild game.

Bonus material: Clutterbuck also received a two-minute minor for running Brian Elliott in the game's final minute that might draw a second look from the Department. He didn't appear to put much of an effort into stopping, and in the context of this game, it would be very easy to see the sojourn into the crease as an intentional act.

Lucky for Clutterbuck, there's so much else to get through in this game that we'd be shocked if this wasn't lost in the shuffle.

Are you serious? Why on earth would Backes get a suspension? Spurgeon clearly blew a tire. The Wild were appalling.

i agree the wild were a sickening bunch

i laughed when this article stated backes might be suspended. this author is not the hockey variety.

Not a fan of either team but: the Backes hit doesn't deserve a penalty; let alone additional discipline. Both Clutterbuck's charge and Peters cross-check deserve a couple games off.

A cross check to the head like that deserves no less than ten games even for a first offense. That's some Bertuzzi crap right there and he should have banned for life.

Is anyone surprised Stephane Auger was refereeing another game that got out of control? This guy is easily the worst official in the league, absolutely brutal.

Pretty sure Auger did the Pens/Flyers game today. Nonetheless that game was just as brutal for the refs.

Backes' 'hit' wasn't even a hit. Looked like he didn't even touch him before he fell and then barely touched him as he was going down. That shouldn't get anything. Peters will definitely sit at least a game or two. A crosscheck to the head like that is definitely worthy of at least a game. Clutterbuck definitely left his feet and contacted the head. Looks to me like the head wasn't the principal point of contact though, looks like he first connects with the high chest and then - because of his leap into the hit - he rises up and contacts the head. He'll be sitting for a few games for that. It was a dangerous, reckless, dirty play and I'd put money on him getting 3+ games even though, to me, it doesn't look like the head was the principal point of contact.

and add the end of the game, hitting elliott. Even though it wasnt intense, he made no effort to avoid hitting him

      Andy Strickland @andystrickland
#Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck yelled to Andy McDonald "I hope you get another concussion" from the bench. #norespect #Blues

I am a Wild season ticket holder and I say Clutterbuck is a total "tool". At best a 4th liner on any other team!

mooney finally posts a video that works, but follows it up with blatantly biased and incorrect statements about Backes. He didn't touch Spurgeon, let alone "ride him into the boards". this blog is worth reading unless its in reference to the Blues.

If you listen to Hab and nuck posters this only happens in Bruins games... They probably won't read this as it doesn't involve the Bruins.

The Wild have fallen to an all time low.

Uh Peters is not one of the top "centres" on the Wild. He's a Houston Aero that is only on the team because he works hard. He may be going back to Houston now.

Spurgeon fell turning at the boards and was obviously unhurt. The only dirt I see here is from the Wild-boys. Playing bad is one thing, but adding dirt to it means they are s#!#.

Backes had clearly had nothing to do with Spurgeon falling into the boards. Someone needs to pull the stick out of Clutterbuck's #$%$ and shove it down his throat. I wish he would have fought Reaves because his face would have been bloody. The Wild have become a complete trash team and they act like it.

i put peters in the same class as bertuzzi & mcsourly

Peters and Clutterbuck both deserve suspensions. I'd say 3 and 1 respectively. Backes even mentioned for a suspension is a total joke. He did nothing to even deserve a minor penalty on the play. The Wild player lost an edge and the fact they went after Backes shows just how bad the coaching has gotten in Minnesota. Harrison you suck!

Pretty sure Backes didnt even touch the guy. Like Pang said, it looks like he blew a tire. Turn it around this way; the Blues player falls at the hands of the Wild player. Are you Wild fans chirping then? No, probably not. It's one thing to be a passionate fan, but being a biased , delusional *#$%$ is different.

I watched this game live and here's what it looked like as it happened:

Clutterbuck - I think he's looking at a Shanaban just for the run on Pietrangelo. He left his feet AND targeted the head with NO attempt to get the stick down and contest for puck possession. I'm not crazy about that drive-by on Elliott either, but I don't think it was hard enough to warrant supplemental discipline... let it go with the penalty, or a fine if they really have to.

Backes - Looked about as clean as these board plays can get (not that plays like this are in any way good). He had the stick pointed towards the puck, contesting for possession, and didn't have time to bail out of the move when Spurgeon definitely blew a tire before contact is made. If Spurgeon doesn't lose his traction going towards the boards, this would be a clean hit and the Peters play doesn't happen.

Peters - This should get a fine if not a suspension as well. Play was clearly stopped - if you want to fight it out, then drop the gloves and fight. But the stick to the side of the head is a dirty move and I just hope Backes isn't too badly injured after hitting the ice in pain following that impact. He claims it was accidental... no dice, that was clearly a swing at the head of the Blues' captain.

Hopefully the combined length of their suspensions is more than the number of shots the Wild had today. Both should get at least 5 games. Peters hopefully gets double digits, because a deliberate cross check to the head after the whistle is really really lame. Even worse, he did it with Backes surrounded by 3 Wild players. 3 versus 1, and a cross-check to the head. Apparently thats how Minnesota plays.

Please quit calling five minute majors and game misconducts, as the official NHL report clearly states Peters was given, match penalties. There's a difference, a match penalty is a separate, more serious penalty than a GM. The information given here is misleading.

I'd love to call out Backes for a dirty hit, but if I tried to in this case it would be a lie. Spurgeon clearly blew a tire, Backes didn't get a chance to decide whether to let up or actually run him from behind

Peters will definitely get a Shanaban and Clutterbuck should as well.
