Ted Nolan hired as interim coach, Pat LaFontaine takes over hockey ops to rescue Sabres

Imagine one of the most disappointing teams in hockey, at the start of a significant rebuild, decided to fire its coach and its general manager.

In their place, they hire a man to run their hockey operations whose sum total NHL front office experience is 40 days as an unpaid advisor to the New York Islanders before resigning; and a man who last coached in the NHL in 2008, is better known for accusations of racism than accomplishments since then.

Would this be considered a … logical move?

Of course not. It’s bat[poop] crazy. Which is either a symptom of what the Buffalo Sabres have become or exactly what the Buffalo Sabres need.

The team announced on Wednesday that Pat LaFontaine, the team’s former star center, will take over as president of hockey operations (a new title) and that Ted Nolan, who coached the Sabres from 1995-97 and is currently the coach of the Lavtian national team, will be their new interim head coach. (Emphasis ours.)

Darcy Regier, the embattled general manager of the Sabres since 1997, and Ron Rolston, the team’s first-year head coach after serving as interim coach last season, were fired last night according to TSN.
