Remember back in high school, when it was time to vote for student council president?
If the EA Sports NHL 15 cover athlete vote were that election, then T.J. Oshie would have been that student who had the most neon, glittery signs in the hallways; who handed out the most light-up buttons; and whose dad managed to get one of the dudes from One Direction to film a YouTube endorsement of his candidacy.
Which is to say he and his supporters tried really, really, really hard to get the Sochi Olympic star the cover. Radio stations pushed his candidacy. TV stations pushed it. Blogs pushed it. As you can see from the image here, HE EVEN USED HIS NEWBORN BABY TO PUSH IT.
Welp ... all we can glean from Tuesday’s news is that hockey video game fans hate babies. Because T.J. Oshie didn’t make the final cut for the NHL 15 cover.
From EA Sports:
The winner will be revealed during the 2014 NHL Awards from Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas on June 24, 2014. The 2014 NHL Awards will be broadcast by NBCSN in the United States and CBC in Canada.
This is the final opportunity for fans to decide the face of a new generation of hockey videogames. Voting for this round is now live and fans can vote an unlimited number of times at NHL.com/CoverVote, until the round closes on June 1 at 11:59pm ET. Fans can double their voting power by showing their support for either Subban with the hashtag #NHL15Subban or Bergeron with the hashtag #NHL15Bergeron on “Twitter Vote Thursdays.”
The failure of “Vote for Oshie” aside, this is a fascinating little hockey culture study in the final.
Bergeron has the respect of anyone that knows the game but doesn’t exactly have the profile of a front-of-the-video-game-box NHL star. Maybe this vote elevates him to that status.
Besides being one of the most divisive players in the NHL, Subban would be only the second person of color to grace the worldwide edition of the EA Sports hockey video game since its debut in 1991, after Jarome Iginla in 2003.
(Subban did have a Quebec-only NHL 13 alternate cover on sale.)
So we’re left with a pretty cool final two. Vote early, vote often.
As for Oshie … hey man, next time borrow some of Backes’ dogs. Everyone loves puppies.
