Stone has 'microfracture' in wrist; Subban won't face discipline for slash

Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban will not face supplemental discipline after his slash of Ottawa’s Mark Stone in Wednesday’s Game 1 4-3 Canadiens win.

Subban was ejected from the game and assessed a five-minute major. According to a Twitter report from ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, that was enough for NHL Department of Player Safety head Stephane Quintal.

And Stone seemed to go in and out of the lineup quite a few times after the play as he tried to determine if he could actually return. The Senators announced, after the LeBrun report, that Stone had a microfracture in his wrist and his status is “unknown.”

Playoff injury drama for $200 CAD, Alex Trebek.

Oh, and there was the morsel from Ottawa coach/prime minister Dave Cameron after fielding a question from the media/parliament.

“I think it’s an easy solution. You either suspend him, or if one of their best players gets slashed, you just give us five. It’s not that complicated.”

As LeBrun also notes, Mr. Prime Minister will not be fined for these comments.

Hockey justice for $300 Alex!

As our own Nick Cotsonika wrote in his most excellent story off Thursday night’s game:

Rule 61.3 says the referee has the discretion to call a slashing major “based on the severity of contact.” It says he has no discretion if there is an injury: “A major penalty must be assessed.” Rule 61.5 says whenever a slashing major is assessed, a game misconduct penalty “must also be imposed.”

The Canadiens were assessed a major penalty in a playoff game. They played most of it without their best defenseman. Stone may return to the series. Give it a rest.

But there’s more … oh yes there is, because it’s the playoffs, and these teams hate each other of course.

According to the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch Chris Neil is practicing on the fourth line for the Sens on Thursday. Oh great, that Chris Neil. The one who ‘plays the game the right way’ even though he runs around like a lunatic half the time 'unintentionally' injuring people. He has been out since mid-February with a fractured thumb.

Well, it is an all-Canada series. Old time hockey for $500 Alex!
