Sorry, Rick Nash: Dustin Brown just became the pretty girl at NHL trade deadline dance

Getty ImagesHe's a 27-year-old forward averaged 27 goals over the last four seasons. He's been a leader on his team for several seasons, earning the captaincy. He's a physical presence, among the League leaders in hits each season.

No, Dustin Brown isn't Rick Nash. He's not a franchise-redefining offensive force, one that could challenge for the Richard Trophy if paired with the right centerman named Joe Thornton.

But if he's available -- and his sudden addition to the trading block does have a whiff of "motivational scare tactics", along with transactional logic -- Brown doesn't have way to veto a trade; and he's affordable, with $3.175 million cap hit and a contract that only runs two more seasons.

In the wake of the Jeff Carter trade, Dustin Brown suddenly become the hottest commodity of the 2012 NHL Trade Deadline.

But why would the Los Angeles Kings cut bait on their captain?

Bob McKenzie of TSN broke the news that Brown was available on Thursday night, stating that "Brown's potential availability is 'bigger' deal than Rick Nash in sense of how many more top teams involved."

The teams he's hearing: The Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks.

A few of those teams are in the Nash Derby, where the reported price tag is a roster player, two top-level prospects and a first-round draft choice, on top of the $7.8 million cap hit on the books through 2018.

Brown, obviously, is the cheaper model, in every sense.

If his captain is available, it's an indication that GM Dean Lombardi saw stagnation from his core at a time when games needed to start elevating to championship levels. Out goes Jack Johnson, their No. 2 cornerstone defenseman, for Jeff Carter. Now it's Brown that's on the block, potentially.

Coach Darryl Sutter called out Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown this week, in what might have been a harbinger of things to come for one of them. Sutter on Brown, whose partnership with Kopitar he called "stale":

As for Brown, Sutter shouldered some of the responsibility, noting Brown had scored once after moving to left wing about a month ago.

"He's a straight-line, up-and-down, go-to-the-net, shoot-the-puck, run-over-people player," Sutter said. "So just break it down. If he's doing those four or five things, he's effective. If he's not doing all those things, he's not effective."

Brown's availability was a stunner, no doubt, but conditions have changed for the Kings. They've regressed as a contender, forcing Lombardi to make dramatic moves behind the bench and through a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets. They also added a significant leader in Mike Richards last summer; and as Richards can tell you from his days in Philly, multiple captains in the same locker room usually means one will eventually pack up and vacate that room.

    From Bobby Scribe, Kings blogger:

Dustin Brown is average, at best, defensively. He can hit. He is not mean. He is not edgy. He is smash mouth in his hitting only. He cannot fight. He is good for 15-25 goals per season and is wildly inconsistent from week to week. His hockey IQ is questionable.

Is he the L.A. Kings' intended identity? I don't believe so. I don't believe Dustin Brown represents what Dean Lombardi wants this team to become. That is not to say Lombardi is right but don't think for a second Mike Richards' arrival here was a happy accident. Richards is exactly what Dean wants. The player who is to the Kings what the Leonidas character was to the Spartans in the movie 300.

… if Dean Lombardi is still the L.A. Kings GM after this season, Dustin Brown will be playing elsewhere by the start of next season. I am not stating I agree with it but it is what I believe will occur.

So if his isn't just a fire lit under the captains posterior, perhaps a change in venue is in order for both parties. The Kings transition their roster further to FlyersWest, and Brown brings his physical game to another contender.

With due respect to Rick Nash, Brown may now be the most coveted forward available at the deadline. Acquiring him might not have the same dramatic impact, but it certainly won't have the same potential repercussions, either.

Dustin Brown is the man. Any team would be lucky to have him.

Class act. Physical player who isn't afraid of going hard to the net and taking abuse.

Bob MacKenzie said on Twitter "LAK like Brown as "player," not as enthused about Brown as captain." Ouch. Whether that opinion is accurate or not it's sure to get back to Brown and how could it not affect his mindset for the foreseeable future?

Maybe it lights a spark under him, and helps him be the captain the Kings want him to be? Either way, that's a pretty brutal thing for DL to say.

Lombardi wouldn't say that. That's just the vibe Bobby Mac is feeling in LA. I hope it's not true but I trust McKenzie's judgement more than any other hockey commentator.

The Kings are known for their stupidity in terms of trades.... as they are with their minor league team, the Manchester Monarchs. They've become over the years the reference for bad moves..... "Yeah, they pulled a Kings move."

Lombardi & King ownership are too blame for this boring, slow unskilled team. Lombardi came here to LA 6 plus years ago. He preached "patience add need for 5 years to be Cup Contender." Well they are not & he has been panicking this last year. It is all because of "System & team Style." Murray should have been let go a year or 2 ago. So it cost us Moulson, Purcell, Simmonds & schenn , who are playing great elsewhere & scvoring more than Richards, Williams & Kopi. He got Penner. C'mon. Lombardi should have been fired before Richards trade. And he got Sutter, who is same coaching style as Murray. Now we lost Jack. So what happened to patience & 5 years. Lombardi. Same #$%$ who traded away Cammaleri & has been looking for missing piece. He had it. If this team had Cammi & Schenn & Simmonds & moulson & Purcell & a Dan Bylsma coah last 3 years instead of Murray, Sutter & Lombardi, team would be Cup Contender.

I'm a Kings fan (die hard). Dustin Brown is far and away my favorite player. BUT...if culture change is what they are going for here (and I agree, it needs to be done), I'll pack his bags for him. No one player is more important to the overall picture.

However, if they do indeed do this, they need some grit (up front) coming back, and someone who is willing to do whatever it takes to win.

A culture change is indeed needed. I don't care much about what happened in Philly as Pronger is the real reason for the issues with those who were sent away.

I hope he doesn't get traded. He is a nice kid, and great leader for the team.

Congrats L.A. for aquiring Carter and Richards and creating a dressing room mess,, Philly had to get rid of the two bcuz they cause problems in the dressing room and the sudden talk of Browns C in questions is proving that the Kings are heading in that direction

Why are the Kings making dramatic moves? They have a young team. So what if they didn't get it done this season. Dean Lombardis knee jerk reaction to the Kings recent poor play is going to cost them big in the long run. Hiring Sutter was also a stupid mistake as he has not been an effective coach for 8 years. Way to ruin the Kings in one season Deano.

Should have picked up Boudreau instead of Sutter. He knows how to run an offense loaded with talent. Just look at the 2010 Caps as an example.
      • Daniel 2 months ago
This might be the most misguided comment ever. Yeah, the 2010 Caps won the presidents trophy, but you failed to mention they were booted in the first round. Booted in the 2nd round of 2009. Swept in 2nd round of 2011. Just because your team can score doesn't mean your team is gonna win.
      • Chau 2 months ago
The Caps never had solid goaltending and a defense like the King's. That's the biggest difference between the two but you can't deny the fact that the Kings NEED a new system that will let loose their offense. If the Kings really wanted to implement a new offense oriented system then Boudreau would have been the better choice than Sutter.

I would love to see Brown in Black & Gold.
If Claude and the system can boost his defensive game, then I think you've got a Bruin through and through with this kid. Problem is, depending on the asking price, the Bruins can't afford to give up anyone from the back end on their current roster. IMO, Kampfer and/or Bartkowski haven't played enough to fill that spot and I wouldn't do it for Dougie.
      • Mike 2 months ago
Boychuk, Caron and a pick. LA just unloaded a top D-Man and need a filler. Dougie will fill Boychuk's shoes nest season so no worries there. The #$%$ desperately need to find a replacement for Horton and DB would be a perfect fit
      • Chau 2 months ago
Kings don't need Boychuk. I'll take Voynov over Boychuk any day.
      • John 2 months ago
Kings would take Dougie Hamilton plus a roster guy though...

As a Rangers fan; I'd definitely take Brown over Nash. I'd give up Dubinksy, McIllrath and a 1st.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it.
      • JB 2 months ago
Wit, are you serious? Brown is slightly better than Dubinsky... not two 1st rounders more.
      • Bonzopookie 2 months ago
Dubinsky is a one year wonder. Of course NY is going to overrate. They overrate everything. Look at Jeremy Lin!
    • cc  •  New York, New York  •  2 months ago
I'll take Dustin Brown on the Rangers any day. Suits the Rangers style, New York roots, young, affordable and good in the dressing room. May not be the offensive force the Rangers are looking for right now, but adding Brown would be like adding another Callahan, and there sure isn't anything wrong with that.
    • Andrew  •  Manchester, New Hampshire  •  2 months ago
I have no idea what it would take, but he would look good in a Spoked B
    • Ernie L  •  2 months ago
Brown brings to the table a hell of a lot more than Nash does, and for way less.

Teams will line up to get him, but no one is going near that $7.8 million land-mind

Fun fact, Nash is on pace for 56 points this year. If he stays healthy and finishes the season, Which he won't. So $7.8 million for 50 points. Who is dumb enough to take that?
    • Bonzopookie  •  Boston, Massachusetts  •  2 months ago
Ever Rangers fan wants to give up Dubinsky. Why? Because he is a one year wonder. That's why! Don't fall for the hype. Dereck Dorsett has more long term value
    • Grampa  •  2 months ago
Kings need a speed merchant or two. They are somewhat slower than most other teams. Kopitar, Penner, Richards, Carter, Brown, all are not very fast. The defense would look better if the forwards could burn through the neutral zone and pressure opposing d-men. Wasting Doughty's passing talents on slow forwards is just stupid.

I would NEVER in a million years trade JVR for him. I'm sorry. JVR's ceiling is way beyond Brown's at this point in time. JVR could easily become one of the best scorers in the NHL. 3 years from now and he'll already have a 40 goal season in his career, maybe even more. Kid has an amazing amount of talent and potential. One of the hardest wrist shots in the game, he can snipe, he's fast, can dangle, and he's a big forward. His upside is better than Brown's. It will take more than Dustin Brown, who apparently all of a sudden is the best player available, for JVR. Brown would be a great addition to the Flyers, just not at the expense of one of our many players who are under 23 and have superstar potential. Notice how the Nash deal died when CBJ wanted Schenn or Cooter. Those players are just as untouchable as #28

Elliotte Friedman at HNIC reports that LA GM Lombardi now telling inquiring GMs that Dustin Brown is not available.

Think D.Lomabardi is just trying to save his job by making these moves. J.Carter??? you gotta be kidding me and for us to throw in a 1st rounder with just makes this move hurt as a loyal kings fan. I still can't watch the flyers cause we got jacked by them and now we got jacked by the Columbus blue feathers? cant even remember their name. Either way after building a deep talented roster were giving all that up so our GM doesn't lose his job?? Whatever the only way Lombardi can make this up is to trade D.Brown to Boston for D.Hamilton
