Sidney Crosby visits neurological specialist who got Jennifer Grey dancing again

Having spent several days with chiropractic neurologist Ted Carrick in Atlanta, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has traveled to California to meet with a physician slightly more respected in sports circles.

    From the Penguins:

Sidney Crosby traveled to California Friday to visit with Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist, as part of his continuing treatment program. Crosby will undergo a series of tests with Dr. Bray. Crosby has not played since Dec. 5 because of concussion-like symptoms.

Dr. Bray is founding director and CEO of the D.I.S.C. Sports and Spine Center.

He worked with the U.S. Olympic team at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. "Sidney is meeting with some of the top specialists in the country as he continues his recovery," said Ray Shero, the Penguins' general manager.

So who is Dr. Robert S. Bray?

Here's his bio from the D.I.S.C. organization and here's his webpage.

He's probably best known for fixed up the back of "Dancing With the Stars" winner Jennifer Grey, who reported she was pain free after surgery removed a "huge fragment" from her back.

He was also part of the 47-member medical staff that supported the U.S. Olympic team during the Vancouver Games. From that announcement in 2010:

In addition to routine medical care, Dr. Bray's expertise in neurological spine surgery will make him an invaluable member of the medical team. Dr. Bray will serve as the head team doctor for luge, bobsled and skeleton and will provide support for the alpine sports. Dr. Robert S. Bray, Jr.

For nearly 30 years Dr. Robert S. Bray Jr. has been at the forefront of the innovations taking place in minimally invasive spine surgery. He has performed more than 10,000 procedures.  Approximately 95% of his surgical cases are performed on an outpatient basis, while the national average is 5-10%.

Bray's organization also jointly owned a sailboat with the Los Angeles Kings. Not a schooner … a sailboat.

Meanwhile, expect more criticism about Carrick now that Crosby's getting another opinion on his concussion rehab.

His appearance at Sidney's "he's like a Ferrari" press conference last year raised eyebrows. The Science-Based Medicine blog has been sending shots his way for two years, like here and here, which mentions Crosby.

It's amazing how many brain surgeons make informed comments here .Most of these commenters can't even spell " brain ".

I feel sorry for the kid to have his career end so soon. I think they should put the hockey gear back to what it was in the 70's, the players feel invincible in todays gear.

With long lasting concussion symptoms it might be a good idea to see this specialist. Hockey players twist and turn and just an fyi, I have degenerative disk disease in my neck and believe me prior to surgery headaches, lightheadness and balance were affected. I don't know everything, but , if I were Sid I would be looking for an alternative answer for those symptoms.

Its time to call it quits Sid. Pens are doin fine without you, though we luv to have you but ur health comes first. Without it, as the song goes, "Nothing Else Matters..."

They sounded quacky and insulting to others suffering from concussions when they said Sid's recovery would be harder because his 100% isn't like anyone else's - all relative no? Just hope Crosby gets the best MD money can buy and gets well soon.

I hear when he gets back he may still have a concussion but will at least have double D's. Couldn't resist. Wish Crosby the best in his recovery.

Sorry to say this folks ,
Sidney will always carry the damage that that head case deliberately laid on him.
Brains don't repair ever. if he doesn't make the choice to leave its only a mater of time.
he could be seriously disabled . in his so called retirement years,,
he may wish he left now.Sidney has many opportunities for a successful
hockey career as a manager or commentator .
But his days of running into every head case in the league who only are there
to cripple the better players. makes this game a very dangerous one for him
If he were my son i would give him this advice.
        Sidney !
better to be in a new carrier then in a wheel chair for life.

Well...after a year, that might be a good idea to meet with one of the top specialists.

He has been seen bye many specialists-even a chiroprator(heaven forbid)-he is a target now-He is the best in the world no question-but anytime he is on the ice he will be hit to put him out again-the first hit was criminal-you don't hit a guy whos not in the play-second hit he should have been able to take-he can't take too many more of those thats for sure, otherwise his future life will be in jepardy-Garry Bettman-you care?I doubt-you should have been let go along time ago but then you support the owners-thats $$ aye-you could care less long as the old paycheck is there-you creep

It worries me when he has gotten to the point where he is grasping at straws and using quacks like this. I am tired of homeopathy and other make believe modalities taking advantage of desperate people.
      • nicapa03 4 months ago
So what is your reasoning in considering Dr Bray a quack when he was good enough to head a US Olympic medical team? Think before you post!
      • Kris 4 months ago
80 % of modern medicine is based on homeopathy.

Seems like allot of great Pittsburgh players have been injury prone over the years. It’s a shame to think of all the great hockey moments missed from injuries, and records that could have been broken by these guys had they have stayed healthy.

You're quite the whiner. Just those "great" Pittsburgh players.

I'd love to see him back playing and in good form again. Most of all I'd love to see him well and strong with no more problems. If you've never siffered a concussion then keep your yaps shut. It's no fun and many have lasting effects or effects that turn up years later to ruin your life. If they 'd get rid of the armour and just play the damned game they'd all be better off.
Many also suffer epilepsy after having a sever concussion because of the scars they leave. I know since I have it and mine's caused from a concussion too that no one thought serious at the time. Only my father who kept telling the stupid doctors there was more wrong than they were saying when I couldn't stand and everything kept spinning so badly I kept getting sick to my stomach and actually falling over from lack of balance. It took months to get over that then years later the seirzures started and lo and behold they did an MRI, and EEG and found a scar exactly where I'd been hit. Now they say they didn't have the equipment to diagnose it properly years ago. Well they sure as hell have it now so let him get the best treatment possible and recover without the side effects for the rest of his life.
