Sidney Crosby scored one goal in 13 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they crashed out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in Round 2 against the New York Rangers. The lack of red lights being turned on by the eventual Hart Trophy winner ignited many "What's Wrong With Sidney Crosby?" columns. He was even surpassed several times in the weekly"Best Player in the World" standings by some writers.
After Pittsburgh was eliminated in Game 7, Crosby didn't blame his lack of scoring on an injury. On Wednesday, we found out that something indeed was bothering the Penguins captain.
According to Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Crosby is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist sometime this week.
An individual close to Crosby, who requested anonymity, said the surgical procedure "is not major, but you can't play the same way" with the kind of injury Crosby had.
The NHL MVP is not expected to miss any time next season, the source said. Crosby decided to have the operation only after therapy failed to correct the problem.
It is not known precisely when or how he was injured.
While the shots may not have been going Crosby's way, it's not like this wrist injury was hindering his abilities. If you took a look at his possession numbers, you wouldn't have had any kind of inking something was bothering him. His Fenwick rating was 63.7 percent and the Penguins generated 11.7-percent more shots with no. 87 on the ice than when he wasn't when the score was close.
Crosby finished the regular season with 36 goals and 104 points with a presumably healthy wrist. Pittsburgh opens the 2014-15 season on Oct. 9 against the Anaheim Ducks.
UPDATE: Here's a statement from Penguins GM Jim Rutherford:
"Sidney Crosby has been undergoing treatment on a right wrist injury that he suffered during the season. Sid is getting medical advice to determine the best path moving forward, including the possibility of arthroscopic surgery. No final decision has been made on surgery at this point. We expect to have a decision by early next week."
